While waiting at a railway station recently, I happened to get a clear view of a train from above.
Something unusual caught my attention on top of the coaches—large metal units fixed along the roof. From a distance, they almost looked like industrial ventilation equipment.
I had no idea what they were, so I decided to find out.
After doing some research, I learned that these rooftop systems are known as Roof Mounted Package Units (RMPUs). They are the heavy-duty air-conditioning systems responsible for keeping air-conditioned train coaches comfortable, even during extreme summer temperatures.
What surprised me was the scale of the technology involved. Unlike the ACs we use at home, which are designed for a single room, these units have to cool an entire coach filled with passengers while the train is constantly moving through different weather conditions.
The engineering behind them is remarkable. They are built to operate continuously, withstand vibration, dust, heat, and changing climates, all while maintaining a pleasant environment inside the coach.
Another interesting fact is their price. Each unit represents a significant investment, often costing several lakhs of rupees due to the advanced components and durability required for railway operations.
It made me appreciate something I had never thought about before. Every comfortable train journey depends on countless pieces of technology working quietly in the background—systems most passengers never even notice.
Have you ever looked at the roof of a train coach and wondered what those massive units are? Sometimes the most impressive engineering is hidden right above our heads.

You're 5 ft, why do you want to marry a 6 ft guy?
You're broke and unemployed, why do you want to marry a man with a high income?
You don't own a house, why do you want to marry a man who owns a house?
You're setting standards you can't meet yourself.
