People forget that in the 1990s, Britain was the fourth biggest manufacturing economy in the world. Through the 1990s the number of jobs in manufacturing *increased*. From 1993 to 1998, British manufacturing employment increased from 4.1 million to 4.3 million. Not unrelatedly, across the same timespan, electricity prices dropped by 22%. Our manufacturing crisis today is above all an energy crisis.

Ro, thankfully we’ve made progress on race since the 1930’s. Not so much on antisemitism. And btw, the better analogy here would be - would you or I, as Members of Congress, work with bigoted influencers like Nick Fuentes or Hasan Piker to advance legislation. I would not. Would you? And btw Ro, I’m not talking about cancelling anyone. I’ll speak with anyone who’s an honest broker. That’s actually what I do every day. But I am talking about condemning what people say & do when it’s warranted- condemning bigotry, antisemitism, & condemning people who express support for Hamas or Hezbollah. That all should be easy to condemn. I come from the right. A bigoted nationalism has overtaken the right. I engage with it every day and I condemn it every day. A bigoted, antisemitic, anti-Americanism is sprouting up on the left. Piker gives voice to this. It too must be engaged with and condemned every day. Correct? Have a nice weekend.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

Joe, historical question. Do you think FDR should have worked with Rep Rankin, a rank antisemite and racist, to set up the Tennessee Valley Authority? We should take firm positions on principle and condemn specific statements we disagree with. But in a messy democracy must engage broadly. I would also argue that we can approach our fellow citizens with less judgment at a time of deep polarization.

Enough with this sophistry. Pope Leo is no pacifist. He has in the past explicitly praised the military calling, and indeed "the mission of the Christian soldier" to defend the weak. What he was condemning, obviously, are aggressors who claim God on their side. And when the president is now threatening war crimes, it is obscene to pretend that it is the pope who somehow doesn't understand just war doctrine.
Tony Perkins@tperkins

The Pope needs a history lesson. "His rhetoric distances himself from both Catholic tradition and biblical tradition... It misunderstands the very premises of just war, which Catholic tradition... has always been grounded in." @ProvMagazine's @mlivecche

When you consider who Trump chose for his cabinet (e.g, crackpot RFK Jr, inept pooch-snuffing Border Barbie, towering human dumpster inferno Hegseth, 3rd-tier legal mind Bondi) and who he wanted but couldn't get (like the serial sex pest and alleged trafficker Matt Gaetz), and how hundreds of people took to my replies to defend the selection of every single one of these absurdities, it's almost impossible to not entertain the thesis of a MAGA low human capital problem.

Call me crazy but... Maybe the guy who was Jeffrey Epstein's business partner and preaches about the return of the "antichrist" shouldn't be controlling all military intelligence, national security systems, ICE ops, HHS/NHS/FDA data, IRS fraud detection, predictive policing, CDC analytics, & 30+ government agencies? I know, I'm just a conspiracy theorist, right?

The answer is no, they won’t. The entire point of primarying Republicans over the last 10 years was to install brainwashed loyalists in the House. Thankfully the 6 year cycle of the Senate made this process slower, which is why you have people like John Thune, who are able to push back against the REALLY nutso stuff like the SAVE Act, but there’s no way there’s enough huevos in either body to actually remove him from office.
George Conway ⚖️🇺🇸@gtconway3d

"The danger with a sick deranged malignant narcissist like Donald Trump is they end up destroying not just themselves but everyone around them. And so, the real question is whether Republicans will finally realize, 'We have to get rid of him too' and 'We have to help the Democrats get rid of him before he destroys us all."

The Trump administration is basically killing paleogenetics. You like learning about ancient history and the ancestry of different racial group? That's for woke liberals.

Europeans might ask themselves this question. If Trump does not care about Putin helping the Iranians to kill Americans, do you think he will care at all about Putin trying to kill Europeans?

The normal checks and balances of the American system allow Congress to remove a president who unlawfully launches and wages a war that the people didn't want and don't support. The legislature's failure to avail itself of its powers is, I think, a dangerous historic blunder.

This is the part that keeps getting buried under the raw numbers. Hegseth spent months pressuring Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to remove four decorated colonels from the one-star promotion list. Two Black men. Two women. Driscoll refused, because their records demanded it. So Hegseth pulled their names himself… which legal experts say he likely had no authority to do. The defense secretary is supposed to approve or reject the entire list, precisely to prevent this kind of targeted discrimination. Then Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George - the Army’s top officer - asked to meet with Hegseth to discuss the blocked promotions. Hegseth refused to meet. Refused to discuss his decisions at all. Then he fired George. Whose term wasn’t supposed to end until September 2027. Nine U.S. officials across all four branches confirmed the NBC reporting. “There is not a single service that has been immune,” one said. The officers’ attributes being cited for removal include past support for Covid vaccine mandates… and association with Mark Milley. The Pentagon’s response to every outlet that asked: “fake news.” They didn’t dispute a single name.
