When you know what the passage is about, it's easier to learn & when you know what we're talking about in class before you get there, it's easier to learn. Thank you @Metacog1 for sharing. I saw more head nods w/ this example than any other learning science topic I've described.

Talked with my class about the importance of "pre-lesson" videos I ask them to watch before class. I used an example @metacog1 presented at a workshop and it went SO WELL! I displayed the following story for a minute, took it away, & asked 2 students to summarize it:

Tonight is my first night going to bed as a widow. Nothing prepared me for the grief of losing my soulmate. Or the anger at those who made it impossible for him to get a ICU bed when he needed one to have a chance to live.

.@Metacog1 your score on your test is an indication of how smart you are... it is an indication of how you prepared for that test... so true

@BKLNcollegeCASE YES! When we teach students about metacognition we can achieve what I call "metacognitive equity" even though some students have not learned these strategies before college.

@Metacog1 This method is also a vehicle for equity. Students who are under-prepared for college-level studying may not learn this strategy on their own, unlike peers who may have college-educated family or come from stronger high schools. It's invaluable for the students we serve.

I'm so glad you're finding the book helpful. Metacognition really is the key to helping students analyze which specific strategies will help them improve their intelligence.
