This afternoon, my wife took our 6 yr old to his basketball practice at the Hollywood YMCA (a genuinely wonderful institution serving families from all walks of life). To get through the gate, they had to navigate past four people sitting on the sidewalk surrounded by hypodermic needles.

He could pay twice the going rate, but with current tenant protection laws, there is too much risk on the landlord’s side to take that chance.

The hard truth about housing and homelessness is that they aren't problems we can tax and spend our way out of. So long as we have a shortage of housing, there will be homelessness, and so long as it's illegal to build more housing in most of the city, there will be a shortage.

It fails to mention that the surge is the result of allowing people to live on the streets in unsanitary conditions. The screenshot is from a 2019 article that spells it out. Public health officials know full well that homeless encampments are the primary source of this deadly disease outbreak. Yet the official interviewed in the TV segment urges viewers to take basic precautions that do not address the actual problem. It’s depressing to watch places that were once the envy of the world descend into squalor.
