Returning them to a place where their life will be in danger will run against the principle of non-refoulement under international law. They are not a threat to the US. The US should honour the treaties on the Convention Against Torture and the Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, which they are signatories to. The US should at least arrange for another safe country to return them, rather than taking them back to the country that will expose their lives to danger.

The Supreme Court just launched one of the largest attacks on immigrants in modern American history. Thousands of Haitians and Syrians now risk losing the right to live and work in the country they call home.
This decision will cause enormous pain across the five boroughs. Here in New York, it falls hardest on our Haitian community, one of the largest in the country, alongside Syrian families.
I joined labor leaders with 1199SEIU, elected officials, and advocates to send a clear message to immigrant New Yorkers: You belong here. We will not turn our backs on you.
@NYCImmigrants will share additional information and resources soon. If you have questions about your status or need legal assistance, call our Immigration Legal Support Hotline at 800-354-0365.

It doesn't work that way. When a protected person voluntarily returns to their country of nationality, it may constitute re-availment of that country's protection, which is one of the grounds for the cessation or revocation of protection. Most protected persons would not risk travelling home because doing so could jeopardize their protected status.
English

@Oluvik @rightwingvegan2 @scotus_wire Thousand of Haitian with TPS have been traveling back and forth for years between the US and Haiti to visit families and take vacations.
They will be fine.
English

@dranok4ever @SenSchumer It is just a nomenclature. They are both seeking protection from persecution or a threat to life. You could call them convention refugees or protected persons, depending on how and where they file their applications.
English

@Oluvik @SenSchumer TPM is not the same as refugee. Don’t confuse 2 things.

In a cruel and inhumane decision, the Supreme Court just turned its back on more than 300,000 Haitians and thousands of Syrians who have worked and raised families here because they faced violence and instability back home.
TPS exists for exactly this reason: to protect people when returning home is unsafe. Haiti and Syria remain unsafe today. Instead of showing basic humanity, Donald Trump and this Court have chosen fear, chaos, and cruelty.
I have introduced legislation to extend TPS for Haitians, and will keep fighting to protect Haitian and Syrian families from being forced back into danger. America should not turn its back on people who came here seeking safety.

@rightwingvegan2 @scotus_wire The Haitians in the US are not dangerous. They are the victims of persecution in Haiti seeking protection. Their security checks had been done before the US gave them protection.
English

@Oluvik @scotus_wire If it's too dangerous for Haitians in Haiti because of Haitians, why is it safe for us to have Haitians in America?

The U.S. is a party to the Convention Against Torture and the Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees treaties, both of which embody the principle of non-refoulement. Therefore, while the U.S. may choose its immigration policies, it cannot lawfully return individuals to countries where they face persecution, torture, or other serious harm. Doing that will run afoul of the treaties they sign.

Returning them to an unsafe country where their life will be in danger will run against the principle of non-refoulement under international law. A country should not return people to places where they face persecution, torture, or serious harm. Given the ongoing security and humanitarian crises in Haiti and parts of Syria, the least the US could do now is to arrange for another safe country to return them, rather than taking them back to the country that will expose their lives to danger.

You don't need citizenship to join Canadian military.
In November 2022, the Canadian Armed Forces announced that permanent residents could apply to join the military to help address personnel shortages. Before then, service was generally limited to Canadian citizens, with only a few exceptions.
Today, both Canadian citizens and permanent residents can apply to join the Canadian Armed Forces, subject to security screening and meeting other eligibility requirements.

BREAKING: The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for hundreds of thousands of migrants from Haiti and Syria.
The decision could expose many TPS holders to deportation and marks a major shift in U.S. immigration policy.
There are at least, 350,000 Haitian nationals, and 6,100 Syrian nationals who are TPS holders who will be affected by this decision.

The UK has increased its deportation rate. Since July 2024, nearly 70,000 immigrants have been deported.
If you are in the UK as an immigrant, please take your legal status seriously. Being out of legal status at this moment can be dangerous.
Also, expect and strategically prepare for the new Immigration policies as we await the announcement of the new Prime Minister.

Banning young Nigerians from leaving the country would violate the constitutional right to freedom of movement and international human rights principles. The solution to brain drain is not force but good governance—create jobs, improve security, provide opportunities, and make Nigeria a country Nigerians would love to stay in.

In Canada, from January to March 2026 alone, 1,079 foreigners have been detained by the CBSA because they are out of status. They will soon be deported once they complete their papers. The same thing is happening in the US.
In practice as an immigration consultant, l have seen a lot of people living in hiding for fear of being arrested because they are out of status. It is better to leave once you are unable to maintain your status than to be detained and deported like a criminal.
I totally agree with you.
English

No fugitive minor rapist would let you know his previous criminal acts. It is the job of the border police to find that out.
The US border office should step up their information collection and sharing mechanism among countries to be able to detect criminals from day one.
Who knows how many minor rapists or criminals of similar nature that are still in the country. The lives of kids are in great danger letting these folks into the country.
It is time for a proactive arrest rather than a reactive arrest.
English

@ICEgov @DeptofWar If you are an illegal immigrant in the US, it is better to voluntarily deport yourself than to face this horror.
The government is currently floating an assistance program that gives money and pardons illegal immigrants that want to self-deport themselves.
