Sensitization at Carnegie Market, Arua City. Aluma Muzamil, a Tax Education Officer explained the thresholds and conditions under which a business or vendor must register and pay taxes. He gave explanations on presumptive tax (small business tax) and the differences between personal and business tax for sole proprietors. People with Disabilities Tipped on Available Tax Exemptions. Kagadi🌲 People with disabilities (PWDs) in Kagadi District have been guided on tax exemptions available to them, in an engagement by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) aimed at strengthening inclusion and economic participation. “PWDs importing assistive equipment in groups are not taxed,” said Naluggwa. “If you qualify for tax exemption, you must apply formally through the Commissioner. Once approved, you will be cleared.” Speaking during a tax education session at JBW Kate Hotel, Naluggwa Babra from tax education said the initiative was intended to help PWDs better understand both their rights, obligations and the benefits within the tax system. Beyond exemptions, PWDs were encouraged to embrace tax compliance as a pathway to economic empowerment. Julius Akankwansa from Domestic Taxes noted that paying taxes should be viewed not as a burden, but as a contribution to development that ultimately benefits everyone. During the session, he sensitised participants on different tax categories. “Pay As You Earn applies to individuals earning a monthly salary of Shs 230,000 and above,” he explained. “PAYE returns must be filed by the 15th day of the following month, while rental and presumptive taxes are filed annually.” For PWDs engaged in business, emphasis was placed on maintaining proper records to avoid penalties and ensures you do not pay more tax than required. Kagadi District Councillor Vicent Aligonzawenka encouraged PWDs to remain confident in their abilities and to take part in national development. “Do not underestimate yourselves. Government recognises us as people of great importance. Being disabled does not exempt us from contributing to national development. We can work, do business, and pay taxes just like everyone else, and these taxes return to serve us,” he said. The engagement closed on a note of shared understanding, with participants better informed about both the support available to them and their role within the wider economy. #FfeBanno
