On this day in 1814, British troops seize Washington D.C. and set fire to the legislature, the presidential mansion and other public buildings. The raid is intended to settle the score for the American burning of towns in Canada, including York (present-day Toronto).

Appreciate you so much, @brokeymcpoverty. All the criticisms are valid. The sheer tonnage of complexities & failings of these people I couldn’t get. Or wrestled with but cut. I took 6 years and fit as much as I could in a 2.5 hour musical. Did my best. It’s all fair game.

@Lin_Manuel @brokeymcpoverty With you LMM! A.Ham was a progressive on slavery, co-founded one of the first anti-slavery groups in the country, and when he worked for a West Indies firm that traded, among other things, slaves, he was just a starving, orphaned kid trying to stay alive.

@brokeymcpoverty Hamilton's views on slavery were very progressive at the time, he was a co-founder of one of the first organizations in the country to end slavery, and when he worked for a trading company in the West Indies that, among other things, traded slaves, he was a starving, orphaned kid
