OMG multiple precision guided munition hitting a target !!! In 2026!!!! Game changer. Jokes aside what this video do not show you, is what really is a swarm, how it operates and why is so difficult. A swarm is not only a large amount of drones, or missiles, flying in formation. Is a single thinking entity each element of the swarm adapt and gather information from the swarm. Each element of the swarm is capable of multiple roles and the swarm can autonomously or via human intervention change the behaviour and role of one or multiple elements of the swarm. Finally the swarm could operate independently from human, knowing the target and making decisions based on data gathered by different sources of available. This is just propaganda a bunch of drones launched to a location, following a path or taking a path pretty linear.

@HartreeFock @David_Hambling I agree, but it is also true that software, is not a problem anymore, no matter what you are after. You might need a mathematician to interact with Codex or Claude in some stages but aside from that, i am confident that today (not 4 months ago) a tiny team + AI would handle it.

My was just one example of games you can use to start your first step in this field. My critique is on the dismissive attitude we have over certain topic, thinking that is simple. But it is not and when you field a system like this for military missions you have a lot of more things to design and test.

@HartreeFock @David_Hambling Same for me, loved working in that field... Fun times, and me too, i got into it because i was building quadcopters in 2009 with custom arduino flight controllers, got to work with some cool guys, they all went to work in china by when i left mid 2010s.

I have used some of those algorithms for other applications but I had collegues working on drone swarm when the quadcopter market was not even serious, and they had to design and build them. We used to test them in cooperative chase, and at the time, was incredible. There is so much computer science and math, unfortunately, I do not work in that field anymore.

@David_Hambling @HartreeFock Masters are replaceable and serve as coordinators, there are more advanced (but not as effective depending on the final use) pure swarm behaviours, but in general the missions are more complex than picking pollen for the queen so we always go to some kind of master.

@David_Hambling @HartreeFock Until us relies on sellers more than makers they will be fucked. They are in love with anduril but luckey is just very good at repackaging tech and selling it (oculus being a great example) all anduril drones are expensive uninspired crap.

@HartreeFock @David_Hambling If you lose the master you replace it with many ways to chose it depending on the swarm and agents types (same specs, different packages and roles etc), picking a new master is a non issue if comms are reliable. We used simple mesh networks >10 years ago (radio) ew was a problem

A swarm also has necessity of choosing which information is correct and which is not, often you have some of the particles/drones to be the masters but if you loose them what you do? Is not “easy”. Chinese are running and surely have an edge in production volume. But their scientific production on the field has not been dramatic, compared to US or Europe or Asia in general

@HartreeFock @David_Hambling Nah, in 2015 we had already worked on dozens of drones swarms with a replaceable lead. Only serious problem was jamming/ew hence why work started on optical comms between the agents. Positioning, optically solved with relationship chain starting from lead. Been there done that.

Is not solvable by optical solution because spatial awareness needs redundancy, because you will have lot of data coming not only from drones of the swarm. 2015 was a time where in a lab you could have wuascopter chasing you for a few minutes charge and had to collaborate. Saying china is ahead by showing a few drones lobbed is not serious.

@David_Hambling @HartreeFock Yeah, and in 2026 even Claude plus a decent engineer would give you a valid software solution for those that where problems in 2015. Real issue is communication and spatial awareness, both solvable optically for most situations.
