If you have not watched the BBC documentary on the killing of children in Gaza, I would implore you to please watch it. They documented over 160 cases. 95 of the children were shot in the head and chest.
If this doesn't trigger you, nothing else will.

Regardless of what people may think of him, Ahmad al shara is an excellent politician, had a little chat with him last September during #UNGA25
16 months ago, this man had a $10 million US bounty on his head. Today he sat in the Oval Office while Trump called him a “strong leader” and the EU wired €620 million to Damascus.
Trump met him in Saudi Arabia the first meeting between an American and Syrian president since Bill Clinton sat across from Hafez Assad in Geneva in 2000.
The US delists him from its terrorist registry. The UK follows. Syria joins the US-led coalition to combat ISIS, the same coalition that spent years targeting his former organization.
December 2025: the US Congress repeals the Caesar Act, the sanctions architecture that had strangled the Syrian economy for years by a Senate vote of 77 to 20.
January 28th: al-Sharaa sits across from Putin in Moscow to discuss Russia’s military presence in Syria.
from designated terrorist to Oval Office guest. From $10M bounty to €620M EU package. From UN sanctions list to UN Security Council briefings. From al-Qaeda affiliate to US-led counter-ISIS coalition member. All in under 16 months. There is no modern precedent for this trajectory.
Al-Sharaa understood something that most leaders in his position don’t: international legitimacy is sequential, not simultaneous. You don’t get everything at once. You accumulate recognition in layers each one making the next easier to obtain. The Gulf states first, because they move fastest and carry the most regional weight. Then Washington, because Washington’s signal unlocks everything else. Then Europe, then the UN architecture.
He also understood that the West needed a usable Syria more than it needed a perfect Syria. With Iran weakened, the Axis of Resistance dismantled, and the region restructuring, a stable Damascus that cooperates on ISIS, and keeps Russian influence contained is worth an enormous amount to Washington.
Al-Sharaa offered exactly that package.
The Kurdish decree of January 2026 recognizing Kurds as an essential part of Syrian national identity, declaring Kurdish a national language, making Newroz a national holiday was also a signal. It told Western capitals: this government can be negotiated with. It is capable of political concessions that Assad never was.
For ordinary Syrians, this matters concretely.
The Caesar Act repeal alone changes everything. That legislation blocked virtually all international investment and reconstruction financing. Its removal means Syrian banks can reconnect to the international financial system, reconstruction contracts can be signed, diaspora remittances can flow freely. The €620 million EU package is real money hitting a country where the GDP had collapsed to single digits during the war years.
Al-Sharaa’s own economic figures 30-35% growth in 2025, a budget surplus, a 550% increase in public sector wages; need independent verification, and the base was so devastated that percentages can flatter. But the direction is real. The sanctions architecture that made recovery structurally impossible is being dismantled. That is a concrete material win for Syrian families.
The diplomatic chapter is exceptional by any objective standard. A country that was a pariah state under sanctions, isolated, destroyed, and governed by a regime the entire world wanted gone is now receiving heads of state, unlocking reconstruction financing, and sitting in multilateral forums as a legitimate actor.
That is what al-Sharaa has delivered on the international stage. And for a Syrian people who went through thirteen years of war, displacement, and collective punishment, the opening of that door however complicated the man holding it is not nothing. It is in fact, everything!
