अख़बार पहले दस-बारह अख़बार आते थे घर में। सुबह-सुबह पूरा घर एक ख़ास गंध से भर उठता था, लेकिन पत्नी गाहे-बगाहे टोकती रहती "कूड़ा भर रखा है मेरे सारे घर में, जहाँ देखो अख़बार ही अख़बार ऐसा लगता है जैसे रद्दी वाले से कर ली मैंने शादी। वह कहती : झाड़ू भी अटकती है शब्दों की भीड़ में और शब्द भी कहाँ, ये सारा का सारा विज्ञापनों या सरकारी विज्ञप्तियों का कचरा है या सरकार के लिए लिखी गई तहरीरें। पता नहीं, पत्रकार भी सारे के सारे जाने कहाँ मर-खप गए। काम करने आई वह महिला बोली, "आजकल तो ऐप पर पढ़ते हैं सब अख़बार, सब्सक्राइब करने की भी ज़रूरत नहीं। अब तो व्हाट्सऐप ग्रुपों में फ्री आते हैं अख़बारों के पीडीएफ। आजकल के ज़माने में कौन मंगाता है अख़बार! लेकिन आज अख़बार वाला फिर डाल गया ताज़ा अख़बार चौखट पर मैंने भागते हुए झुँझलाकर कहा उससे "भाई, हमने तो बंद कर दिए सारे अख़बार तू आज क्यों डाल रहा है?" अंदर से पत्नी की आवाज़ आई "अरे, ये मैंने शुरू करवाए हैं। दीपावली पर सफ़ाई भी तो करनी है। अख़बारों के पुराने लुगदी काग़ज़ों के बिना न अलमारियों में सफ़ाई होती और न विंडो के शीशे साफ़ और ये तुम्हारी कार के काँच भी तो ठीक से साफ़ हो जाएंगे इनसे। वह बताने लगी अख़बार की अनगिनत ख़ूबियां समझाते हुए हैडमास्टरनी की तरह खिड़कियों, दर्पणों और कार के शीशों को पौंछने में चीज़ों को साफ़ करने में अख़बार बहुत कारगर होता है क्योंकि उसका काग़ज़ लिंट नहीं छोड़ता। अलमारियों, दराजों या रसोई की शेल्फ़ में बिछाने से धूल–गंदगी और तेल के दाग़ सीधे सतह पर नहीं आते। रंग–रोगन, पेंटिंग या रिपेयरिंग के समय अख़बार बिछाने से बूंदें और छींटे फ़र्नीचर या फ़र्श पर नहीं गिरते। सामान को लपेटने, बक्सों या थालियों को ढकने, टिफ़िन या बोतलें पैक करने में कितने काम आते हैं अख़बार तुम अख़बार वाले कुछ नहीं जानते अख़बारों की ख़ूबियों के बारे में। कमर पर हाथ रखकर वह कहने लगी, गीले अख़बार से पंखे की पत्तियाँ और बल्ब आसानी से साफ़ किए जा सकते हैं। अख़बार में लपेटकर रख दो तो आम, पपीता या केले कितना बढ़िया पक जाते हैं। और तुमको यह बिलकुल पता नहीं कि सब्ज़ी–फल आदि लपेट तो ताज़ा रहते हैं तेल भी कहीं फैल जाए तो कितना आसानी से सोख लेते हैं अख़बार। और घर के एक कोने में पौधे लगाती वह मालिन भी पत्नी की हाँ में हाँ मिलाकर बोली : पौधों की जड़ों के आसपास बिछाना चाहिए अख़बार नमी बनाए रखने और खरपतवार रोकने के लिए बहुत काम आते हैं पुराने अख़बार। गमले में ये ड्रेनेज लेयर में काम आता है, लेकिन मिट्टी के नीचे रख दो तो पानी बहाव नियंत्रित होता है। और तो और, रद्दी अख़बार बड़े ही काम के होते हैं कम्पोस्ट बनाने में कार्बन स्रोत की तरह बहुत काम करते हैं। सड़क पर जाती सफ़ाई कर्मचारी ने भी नसीहत दी आप तो कुत्ता पालते हो अख़बार मंगवाने से घर साफ़ रहता है मैं और तो आपको क्या कहूँ तोते, खरगोश, बिल्ली–कुत्ते के बिस्तर या पिंजरे साफ़ रखने में भी बड़े काम के हैं अख़बार। पत्नी ने याद दिलाया जब हमारा यह बूढ़ा आलसी कुत्ता छोटा और शरारती था तो इसे समझाने में कितना काम आते थे अख़बार और फिर यह कहते-कहते वह डूब गई पुरानी यादों में कहने लगी, मैं भी तब दो चोटियां रखती थी और स्कूल जाती थी पेपर माशे, पेपर बैग, सजावट की चीज़ें बनाना सिखाई थी मुझे होमसाइंस वाली मैडम ने। और बच्चों की पढ़ाई में भी अख़बार कितना काम आए प्रैक्टिस कॉपी, कट–आउट्स, चार्ट्स या प्रोजेक्ट्स के लिए। अख़बार पर रखकर पॉलिश करने से फ़र्श कभी गंदा नहीं होता। गीले जूते हों या कपड़ों को सुखाना अख़बार नमी सोख लेता है। बरसात में पैरों से कीचड़ पोंछना दरवाज़े पर अख़बार बिछाकर या गिफ़्ट रैपिंग में काम आता है स्टाइलिश भी पर्यावरण–अनुकूल विकल्प भी पत्नी ने बताया : तुम अख़बार के फ़ायदे क्या जानते हो अख़बार बहुत ही ज़रूरी है हर समय में हर काल में।

While DGCA & the Ministry of Civil Aviation are working to organise extra flights, NH-44 between Srinagar & Jammu has been reconnected for traffic in a single direction. I’ve directed the administration to facilitate traffic between Srinagar & Jammu allowing tourist vehicles to leave. This will have to be done in a controlled & organised way because the road is still unstable in places and we are also working hard to clear all the stranded vehicles. We will not be able to permit completely free movement of vehicles at the moment & we hope that everyone will cooperate with us.
