I have $30. So does my neighbor.
I spend my $30 on a live chicken. The chicken lays eggs. I eat some eggs and sell the rest. After a few days, I have made enough money to buy another chicken. That new chicken also produces eggs, so then I make money to buy more chickens. Soon, I have a substantial chicken farm, and I'm making a living selling eggs. I have achieved success.
My neighbor, on the other hand, spends his $30 on a pizza. He eats the pizza and now no longer has $30. He does not profit from his initial $30, so he has no success. He loses.
Did I contribute to my neighbor's loss?

I want my neighbors to speak English. I want them not to litter, not commit crimes, and to return the shopping cart. I want them to be colorblind and not display ethnic bias on jury trials.

Actually, if capitalism truly rewarded skill or intelligence, the richest people would be neurosurgeons, engineers, and scientists.

I’m not even super left wing on questions of prison abolition. I’m certainly willing to entertain all kinds of arrangements. But what I believe pretty strongly is that there are no intellectuals remaining on the right with respect to this stuff. I just literally don’t know how you can watch us speed run into having a carceral state and still have basically no introspection about the intersection of incarceration and politics beyond just, “crime bad.”
Like, never, even in your darkest moments, even when you’re alone on a desert island and no one can see you or hear you and there’s no risk of you getting in trouble, do you ever think critically about the consequences of mass incarceration? Do you literally have no critiques? Do you genuinely believe there are no downsides? Will you not allow yourself to have any ordinary thoughts at all?

As an immigrant to the US I don't think Americans realize to what extent most of the world admires the states.
They look up to it, its incredible. Americans are heroes of the world for the country they've built and the impact on history. Most of modern civilizations major achievements are American, at least the big ones - mass production, space industry, nuclear power, decoding the human genome, robotics and AI, on and on.
There's really nothing that compares to the excitement of moving to the states from another country. You made it. This is the big leagues. The main stage. The soft power of Hollywood cultural projection meant by the time I arrived, everything was oddly familiar, the design of street signs, roads, the look and feel of the country. This guy from India said - "you know, its like I am in GTA" - and its true. Everywhere on the planet people play video games as American soldiers.
You get primed for it, by the time you get here you're like, fuck yeah, America.
When I first moved here for an internship at SLAC I drove a pickup truck down from Canada and played country music. Smoked cigarettes on the highway. Went for late night rips in the hills behind Stanford. Bought a surfboard.
It was just awesome, truthfully, and I think America will have to save Europe from itself a third time, simply by protecting freedom of speech, national pride, individual liberties, given Europeans a taste of those things, showing them - look, this is how its supposed to be. This is how rich you can become if you respect individual rights over government rule, if you relax the bureaucracy, the taxation, the regulation.

Because you're too lazy to start a co op despite claiming it's the superior model.
Nothing stops workers from pooling their resources, sharing ownership, and competing in the market today. The reason most don't is because running a business requires far more than showing up for a shift.
The irony is that socialists insist workers should run society, yet rarely demonstrate a willingness to run even a business. Instead of building alternatives, they demand political power to seize what others have already built.
