Shadia Abu Ghazaleh is a Palestinian national hero everyone should know about. There are several Palestinian schools named for her and Palestinian museums and organizations often celebrate her. She is referred to as a martyr and her murals can be seen all over Pro Palestinian spaces. So why is she celebrated as a martyr? After enjoying a privileged upbringing and studying in University in Cairo, Abu Ghazaleh returned to her native Nablus and joined Palestinian terrorist groups. In November 1968 when she was just 19-years-old, Abu Ghazaleh was killed from the explosion of a bomb she was preparing in her own home. She had planned on taking the bomb she was building, and blowing up Israeli civilians in Tel Aviv, and that very much embodies the story of Palestinian nationalism: taking all the potential for a calm and successful existence and destroying it for the attempt to take the lives of Jewish people because your mind has been poisoned with hate. I ask Palestinian parents and parents around the world: is Shadia Abu Ghazaleh the role model you want for your daughters? Is this the kind of life you would wish on any young person? Why name schools and City squares for her??? Movements are shaped by who they make into their heroes. If these are the kind of people you teach your children to glorify, how do you expect their lives to become any better?
