Kalshi v. Polymarket - who was the SP Episode about? I've been watching the Kalshi v Polymarket South Park saga unfold over the last 16 hours. "Who was the episode actually about?" is the raging debate between supporters on all sides. Read below to see what I found... ________________________________________ For me the interesting thing is to figure out what was *reality* and what is pure *narrative* - because I think that matters a lot. Narrative has its place, but it's most valuable when it tracks with reality to enhance the real story rather than try to fabricate a fake one. Most of CT doesn't actually ever read or investigate anything for themselves - they just take the best "gotcha" or "burn" and decide that's their truth and run with it. The people need a source of truth (which is kinda funny given the whole prediction-markets-as-a-truth-deriver thing)... To avoid bias I'm aiming to present facts first and then give my thoughts as someone who watched the episode and observed chatter online since. Facts: 1) Mentions: Both Kalshi and Polymarket were mentioned. Nobody is disputing that. Both names were said. Both words were on the screen. 2) Logos: Notably, Polymarket's official logo was not featured. Technically Kalshi's logo is just the name, so that one could go either way - it's not disputed that "Kalshi" was written on the newscast during the episode. The app used in the show had a green leaf logo at the top. 3) App UI/UX This one is straightforward. If you access the Polymarket app in the US you just get a blue screen that says "please visit our website." The South Park app/Kalshi app is reproduced side by side below...looks like a pretty obvious match even down to the "Get $10" feature and category layout. 4) Mention order: On the Fox News broadcast, Kalshi is mentioned first. The frames featuring Polymarket came right after that. Kalshi's tweet showing this segment ends before it flips to Polymarket. Polymarket's tweet showing this segment literally cuts out the middle 5-6 seconds showing Kalshi before Polymarket. __________________________________ My Commentary: If I had the transcript handy we could also do an analysis to see how many mentions/etc, but I don't. Instead I think the app-usage is what tells more of the story here. It seems pretty clear to me that the mockup used was modeled extremely closely to the Kalshi app. Given how many times the app/market screens were shown throughout the episode, this imo leans towards the episode being more centered on Kalshi than Polymarket. In any other arena, if we were trying to figure out which 'product' was the featured one, we'd ask which product got more airtime. That gives us an easy answer here. What is kind of odd to me is the narrative being run by Polymarket affiliates. For example, this screengrab below that has been (obviously - and intentionally obviously) doctored by 0xTone is the *actual* screengrab where the Fox News anchor talks about Polymarket lines right after talking about Kalshi lines...edited to strawman(?) Kalshi? I see this and wonder what the intended message was exactly. Like bros you were literally in the episode - why are you scratching out your own name and then trying to pretend that Kalshi wasn't also prominently featured in the episode? No amount satireposting changes what the actual episode had in it. Idk, to me that seems like coming from a self-imposed place of weakness. Why would you try to "punch down" instead of celebrate the exciting night for all prediction markets unless you felt threatened in some way. Further, you've got people leaving incorrect community notes - like this one proposed below that cites the 0xTone post. The note says "Kalshi edited the image" - which is objectively not true. This screengrab showing Kalshi came approximately 3 seconds before the screengrab from 0xTone that was doctored. Leaving a note like this doesn't make sense to me from a narrative perspective unless either the note-writer is incompetent/uninformed (possible - in which case why do they have access to community notes?) or malicious and trying to weaponize community notes against Kalshi (also possible?). Those are really the only two options. So yeah - my view is that the episode was very obviously all about prediction markets. I think it more heavily featured Kalshi than Polymarket - mostly because the app is inarguably almost 1:1 replicating the Kalshi app. Does "who was the episode about" matter? Idk - you get to decide that, but I do think being honest about what happened and not trying to strawman or fabricate reality matters. Prediction markets are inevitable.
