@Within_Between

A podcast about the methods and metascience of developmental science by @jarlogan & @saraannhart. Think of it sort of like a lab meeting with no work.

Did you spot it? A new episode today! S4E11: Revisiting Preregistration and Registered Reports Jess and Sara try to figure out what preregistration even means for developmental scientists. Because as it turns out, it's not well defined. podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withi…

Crowdsourcing!: What are some preferred / best resources (especially any software you might use!) for conducting a multilevel power analysis? And how much information on this process do you typically include in grant applications? @AERA_MotSIG @Within_Between @apagradstudents

@Within_Between Listened to it on my walk this morning. Here’s hoping for more common data elements!! I tried to combine two datasets entered into two state systems (testing & school attendance) and the demographic variables did not have the same options…WHY????

So basically, Ronald Fisher invented randomization because he couldn’t conceive that a woman had an incredible palette. I first heard the story on @Within_Between podcast but never knew the outcome…

The Lady Tasting Tea: How A Simple Experiment Paved the Way for Modern Experimental Design 📊 Exploring the famous "Lady Tasting Tea" experiment, an iconic event that laid the foundations for statistical hypothesis testing. Let's steep ourselves in this historical tale. 🔴 The Setting: In 1925, during a summer afternoon tea, a lady, Dr. Muriel Bristol, claimed she could discern whether milk or tea was poured first into the cup. Ronald A. Fisher, ever the statistician, saw an opportunity for an experiment.
📌 Pro Tip: Sometimes, groundbreaking insights arise from everyday claims! 🔴 Designing the Test: 8 cups were prepared – 4 with milk first & 4 with tea first. The lady correctly identified 3 out of 4 of each, leading to the question – was it just chance or genuine ability?
📌 Pro Tip: Always consider both outcomes. In hypothesis testing, this means setting up null and alternative hypotheses. 🔴 Birth of Hypothesis Testing: Fisher framed it as a combinatorial problem. If it was mere luck, the probability of the lady getting all 8 correct was low. This laid the groundwork for the concept of the p-value. 📌 Pro Tip: P-value gives the probability of observing data (or something more extreme) given that the null hypothesis is true. 🔴 Outcome & Legacy: The lady didn’t get all right, but she did better than mere guessing would suggest. While this didn't conclusively prove her claim, it opened the door to Fisher’s further developments in experimental design and hypothesis testing.
📌 Pro Tip: Fisher's exact test, inspired by this experiment, is now a standard tool for analyzing small datasets. 🔴 Concluding: The Lady Tasting Tea experiment is more than just a quirky tale from history. It represents the birth of concepts fundamental to modern statistics. Next time you sip tea, remember the rich legacy in every cup! 🍵📊 #Statistics #DataScience
