Crayfish may be small, but they play an massive role in freshwater ecosystem, and their future is under threat 🦞💧 A new study conducted by researchers Sebastian Pipins and Dr Rikki Gumbs reveals that climate change could put billions of years of crayfish evolutionary history at risk. Using our @EDGEofExistence assessment, they have identified 70 priority species whose conservation could safeguard much of the group’s diversity. An EDGE assessment is a method used to highlight species that are Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered. In other words, they have a unique evolutionary history and are the most likely to be lost. From ecosystem engineering to climate vulnerability, discover why crayfish matter and how targeted conservation can make a real difference.
