BREAKING: A major water main break in Calgary’s Bowness area on Tuesday evening caused severe flooding along 16 Avenue N.W., trapping vehicles and forcing firefighters to rescue 13 people from seven cars near the CP Rail bridge by 69 Street N.W. Parts of Parkdale, Montgomery, and Point McKay are now under an immediate boil water advisory due to depressurization and potential quality concerns. Residents must boil water for at least one minute before drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, or making infant formula. Bathing and laundry are unaffected. The flooding occurred on the same stretch of 16 Avenue heavily damaged during the catastrophic feeder main rupture in June 2024. The city says the break is likely connected to the Bearspaw south feeder main, though the exact cause and extent of damage remain under investigation. Westbound lanes of 16 Avenue were closed between Home Road and Sarcee Trail, with the roadway shut down entirely for several hours. Around 2,000 homes and 100 businesses were impacted, according to city officials. No serious injuries have been reported. Calgary has activated its Emergency Operations Centre, Municipal Emergency Plan, and Stage 4 water restrictions. Crews are working overnight, with further updates expected later in the morning.
