BREAKING: The Alberta government has introduced legislation that would limit MAID eligibility to patients whose death is reasonably foreseeable within 12 months, making it the first province in Canada to place this kind of restriction on federally permitted assisted dying. Justice Minister Mickey Amery tabled the bill Wednesday alongside Premier Danielle Smith, who said the province is “highly skeptical” of the federal government’s push to broaden MAID access. Under the proposed law, mental illness alone would not qualify a person for MAID, advance requests would be prohibited, and health-care providers would be barred from referring patients to out-of-province assessors. Practitioners could also not bring up MAID unless the patient raises it first, and facilities would be restricted from publicly displaying any MAID-related information. Sanctions for violating provincial rules would range from mandatory retraining up to licence revocation.

The Edmonton police chief says he stands by his trip to Israel, describing it as a valuable learning experience focused on policing and community trust. Chief Warren Driechel said the visit included meetings with police and community leaders across multiple faith groups, including Muslim leaders, and discussions on trust, crime response, and complex policing environments. He emphasized that policing decisions are based on behaviour, not beliefs, and rejected the idea that any community groups should dictate where police seek training or insight.

🇨🇦 A Calgary public school drew online backlash after a parent email revealed its cafeteria and lunchroom would be designated as no-food spaces during Ramadan to support fasting students. At Fairview School, grades 4 to 6 had the cafeteria marked food-free for the first half of lunch, while grades 7 to 9 had their lunchroom food-free for the entire hour. The Calgary Board of Education responded publicly, stating it has a duty to accommodate students practising their religion under Administrative Regulation 3067. The board clarified that students continued eating in their regular designated spaces and that no permanent changes were made to lunch areas.

🇨🇦 An Indigenous group in northern B.C. has asserted Aboriginal title over the airspace above Crown land near Burns Lake, demanding written consent before any aircraft, including government forestry helicopters, could fly over the territory. The dispute escalated to involve both levels of government before Ottawa issued a formal written response. Transport Canada replied in a 12-page letter addressed to four B.C. cabinet ministers, stating that Canada holds exclusive jurisdiction over aeronautics and that no person, group, or level of government has the legal authority to restrict Canadian airspace or impose consent requirements on aircraft operators.
