One person is dead after a fire broke out at a three-storey mixed-use building near 132 Avenue and 82 Street in northeast Edmonton last night.
Fire crews were called to the scene at 9:19 p.m., with the building housing businesses on the ground floor and apartments on the two floors above.
The entire building was evacuated and 11 fire crews responded, with between eight and 10 ambulances also dispatched to the scene.
It has not yet been confirmed how many people were injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Edmonton Police Service closed 82 Street in both directions between 137 Avenue and Yellowhead Trail to allow emergency crews to respond, citing “a collision and fire” in the area without providing further details.
Our followers stated that they heard an explosion prior to the fire.

A woman fatally shot by Calgary police on Deerfoot Trail last month was armed with a knife when officers opened fire, officials confirmed, while her family continues to question the level of force used.
Melanie Hambrook, 53, an Edmonton resident, died after being shot on June 21 following a lengthy confrontation with police.
Officers responded to multiple reports of a dangerous driver near Deerfoot Meadows around 5:30 p.m. and boxed in Hambrook’s vehicle between Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue Northeast.
Officers deployed pepper spray to get her out of the vehicle, after which she advanced toward them holding a knife, as officials later confirmed. A preliminary ASIRT report says officers first used a taser and other non-lethal options before one fired a police rifle.
The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the incident as a Level 1 matter, the most serious classification, reserved for cases involving death, serious injury, or serious allegations against an officer’s conduct. Hambrook’s family says she was struggling with mental health at the time and is calling for the investigation to result in policy changes to prevent similar deaths.
