Melbourne kicked 5.3 from free kicks last night. Richmond supporters losing their minds. As many as 8-10 baffling holding the ball free kicks not paid. It didn’t cost the Tigers the game but how can fans hope to understand holding the ball when it is so inconsistently interpreted by umpires?

@mattricho0 The Dees are so good to watch and we took it right up to them for three quarters. Can’t help but feel a bit rinsed and robbed of a good finish considering how critical some of those officiating errors were

Wouldn't change the result but Richmond got the wrong end of a lot of decisions or non decisions last night. Some baffling calls.

@davisjarrafooty You mean the administrative processes that create ‘franchises’ instead of clubs? Yes the AFL is insular but it’s a tiny sport played by half the population of a country of less than 30 million people. It works in a specific context, and we need to make sure it stays that way

The league is a shambles. I’m a huge fan of international sport, especially American and say what you want about the “Americanisation” of Aussie sports, it would do a lot of good to import a lot of their administrative processes. There are some issues in the game that the AFL can’t fix, but boy do they score a lot of own goals. Worst of all, it seems everytime they appoint a new member, new head of department, nothing actually changes. Wouldn’t hurt to look outside of footy for once, get some fresh eyes and input on the game, people who have no inbuilt loyalty to clubs or employees, no one to appease. #AFL
