There are now Americans trying to manufacture the vibe of Japanese bangers by writing posts in Japanese using AI translate, and I’m starting to understand why cultural appropriation is so bad

If you’re seeing a bunch of Japanese posts, here are some fun facts: Japan has more daily active users and more time spent on X than any other country in the world. Over two thirds of the country is monthly active on X. X in Japan has one of the highest penetration rates of any social network in history.

@wylfcen why not just get grok (or a future version) to translate and explain? i literally used grok to *speak* with a french patient who didn't know english, so instead of getting a translator i tried grok and it worked.

No one who says the Normans ‘enriched’ the language knows much about Old English. They just imagine we had no word for person (mann), animal (dēor), flower (blostma), river (ēa), forest (wudu), mountain (berg), nature (ġecynd), lion (lēo), elephant (elpend), squirrel (ācweorna), eagle (earn), falcon (falca), dolphin (mereswīn), salmon (læx), oyster (ostre), city (burg), army (here), battle (ġefeht), war (ġewinn), soldier (wiga), victory (siġe), nation (þēod), people (folc), magic (galdor), fairy (elf), giant (ent), story (spell), language (ġeþēode), philosophy (ūðwitegung), money (feh), art (cræft), age (eldu), beauty (fæġernes), color (hēow), joy (ġefēa), honesty (sōþfæstnes), bravery (beldu), justice (reht), pity (milts), movement (styring), question (āscung), doctor (lēċe), carpenter (trēowwyrhta), tailor (sēamere), blanket (hwītel), paint (tēafor), table (bord), or chair (stōl).

English has an amazing and underutilized system of direction adverbs: hither/thither/whither (to here/there/where) hence/thence/whence (from here/there/where) They were very common in Old English, as hider, þider, hwider, heonan, þanon, and hwanon. Now, they are sadly considered archaic, and mostly really only used as jokes. We have replaced them with just here, there, and where, and use context or “to” to demonstrate the direction.

ISRAEL’S NEW COLONY Israel is demanding the purchase of 40 Greek islands to serve as a private safe haven for Israelis. They are literally blueprinting the total erasure of Greek borders, planning to usurp full sovereignty and install an Israeli ethnostate in Europe.

English is still the most beautiful, versatile, logical, poetic and wonderful language in the whole world. I speak six languages. Many writers from many other languages say this about English. Because it has been perfected over millennia of discourse, poetry and debate.

@DolphinMossad The types of people buying this book also bought an “I’m with Her” mug, a brat-green tote that just says “kamala”, and several coasters with Obama’s face on them.

>A Catholic Bishop gets put on prime-time national television in the 1950s >No script, no teleprompter, no celebrity guests, just him, a chalkboard, and the Gospel >Hollywood completely writes him off as boring religious programming >Proceeds to absolutely dominate the TV ratings, drawing 30 million viewers every single week >Crushes the biggest secular comedians in the country to win the Emmy Award >Accepts the Emmy on live TV by thanking his four writers: "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John." >Converted countless communists, atheists, and Hollywood executives to the Catholic faith >About to be beatified in 2026 We need more men like this.
