Congratulations to our entire head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team on establishing our Transoral Robotic Surgery Service in UHL @Leic_hospital with excellent patient outcomes in our first year 🙌🥳. It has been my privilege to lead our transoral robotic service at UHL and treat patients with throat cancers. We had a poster presentation of our first year robotic surgery outcomes at the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists (BAHNO) in London 🙌👏👌. Thank you to our Chief Executive Richard Mitchell and UHL leadership for their support and the Samworth Foundation for the funds to purchase the daVinci Xi robot. We have had some excellent outcomes for our cancer patients. For diagnosis, we have found the cancer primary 86% of the time using the robot (tonsillectomy and tongue base mucosectomy). For treatment, patients who had robotic oropharyngectomy and neck dissection have avoided chemoradiation 75% of the time. This is remarkable as it means these patients avoided the toxicity of chemoradiation (given over 6 weeks) like difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, tiredness and did not require feeding tubes or dental extractions. All 25 patients are alive and cancer free except in one case of recurrence in the neck. There were no primary bleeds and only 2 patients had secondary bleeds managed conservatively on the ward. There has been no return to theatre and no need for gastrostomy feeding tubes. Pain generally settled after two weeks and swallowing returned to near normal at three weeks. These are excellent results in our first year providing head and neck robotic surgery in Leicester 🙌👌👏👏 I just want to say a big thank you to every member of our head and neck MDT including Mr Conboy, Mr Mair, Mr Ekrim, Mr Tanweer, Mr Uddin, Mr Ashokkumar & all our surgeons; Prof Vaidhyananth @RamVaidhyanath, Dr Harieaswar, Dr Lam, Dr Niyaz, Dr Menon, Amy Barnes and all our radiology team; Pathologists, Oncologists led by Dr Sri Thiagarajan, Anaesthetists Dr Prea Ramasamy, Dr Hughes; Theatre teams led by Amy, Lisa, Megan, Joy and Co; Allied Health - Speech therapists Clair Sussenbach; Dietitians Catherine Hanlon, McGuinness; ACP Tracy Robinson and Macmillan nurses Laura Shields, Natalie Bull and support Aisha. Kinmonth and Ward 9 nurses led by Matrons Charlie and Petrova; Tracheostomy nurse Amy Croson, Cancer pathway coordinators, ENT Clinic staff, Admins and ENT Secretaries ❤️ We did this together as a team ❤️

I delivered an oral presentation today on a webinar focused on ‘Health inequalities and disparities in cancer care among ethnically diverse groups’ organised by the Dudley Group of Hospitals 👌 My talk was on ‘Tackling disparities in head and neck cancer outcomes’. I shared our experience working collaboratively with the Oracle Head and Neck Cancer UK @OracleHNCUK with CEO Tamara Kahn @TamsykKahn, Dr Gianina Postavaru @uniofleicester, Dr Naina Patel and Aleks. It was most enriching to work with the South Asian Health Network @SAHealthAction, Highfields Rangers Black community and the Bangladesh community 👏👏 We raised awareness of head and neck cancer symptoms and explored how to reduce exposure to risk factors such as tobacco / paan/ gutka chewing which cause cancers of the tongue and cheeks amongst our South Asian communities. Anyone with difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, a neck lump, shortness of breath or weight loss lasting more than 3 weeks, should please see their GP and be referred urgently to our head and neck multidisciplinary team @Leic_hospital. The key lessons we learnt in working with ethnically diverse communities in Leicester is to ensure they have ownership and we listen to their perspectives and suggestions. It is to work with the respected voices in those communities, collaborate with other research groups and ensure representation of the communities in co-producing any outputs. It is important to approach engagement with an open mind and be sensitive to cultural perspectives. Aside our work in Leicester, there were a series of really insightful presentations on reducing health inequalities amongst the black population from Dr Omolade Allen, Dr Andrew Dalton, Mrs Jill Guild, Mr Chidi Molokwu, Miss Georgette Oni (keynote speaker), and Mr Akinfemi Akingboye - organiser 👏👏👌 There is much work to be done in raising awareness of cancer symptoms and ensuring equitable access for ethnically diverse communities 🙏

@Ajithpgeorge Agree; we do them with robot for this paper due to 10 years of access to robot, prior to that they were done with LASER in our institution. The robot is simply a tool (knife/fork/spoon analogy); need to do what is in right in your institution/hands to give best to your patients.

With the help of the amazing @VRDesktop we can now really explore the role of spatial computing in 3D endoscopy. Some tweaks and software development but watch this space as we predict wearables will be the future of minimal access surgery
