If you’re choosing a research group to join, pay just as much - if not more - attention to the culture and mentoring style in the group than the research. You can succeed in lots of research areas or projects, but it’s tough to succeed in an unsupportive environment.

Good to see @NHSEngland & @Asda working together to put vital mouth cancer awareness messaging on oral hygiene products. The new look products encourage shoppers to be body aware & to contact their GP or dental practice with any potential cancer symptoms.

80% of us get HPV infection in our lifetime, but many don't know it causes 700,000 cancers a year. The HPV vaccine can prevent over 100,000 cancers in the UK by 2058. signawaycancer.com

Women are 4-times more likely to have autoimmune diseases than men. Why is this? From Dou et al. in Cell, today In females, the second X chromosome is silenced by a long non-coding RNA, called Xist (pronounced 'exist') - males don't express Xist Xist, together with almost 100 unique proteins, wraps itself around the second X chromosome, silencing it. It's thought that Xist-protein complexes are highly immunogenic, and may represent targets for autoantibodies Dou et al. devised a system to induce expression of Xist in male mice. They found that Xist expression led to the production of autoantibodies, similar to levels found in female mice (RIBO P0/P2 are lupus autoantibodies, CENPA/B are scleroderma autoantibodies): In a mouse model, these autoantibodies in Xist-expressing males were sufficient to cause significant lupus pathology (including in the kidney and the lung): In humans, autoantibodies against the Xist ribonucleoprotein complex were enriched in female patients with lupus, scleroderma, and dermatomyositis Therefore, Xist may solve the puzzle of female-biased autoimmunity cell.com/action/showPdf…

Cervical cancer will be almost eliminated in coming decades if HPV vaccination rates are high in children. In England HPV vaccination coverage in schools is rising again but still below pre-pandemic levels. Please encourage children to get protected. gov.uk/government/sta…

The situation in the UK is deeply concerning. Health is declining and health inequalities are widening. This is not the case with other European countries. The UK's rankings have gone down since 2014. What a tragic waste of lives @ucl @bmj_latest
