After 7.5 incredible years, I have resigned from Twitter/X this week. Twitter was always my dream job. Back in college, I was captured by two groundbreaking technologies: Google Wave and Twitter. While it was magical to see real-time updates on my screen from across the globe, Twitter’s profound impact on society truly amazed me. I witnessed passionate discussions on critical issues—conversations so fervent they ignited a spark within me. Even after Twitter’s ban in China, when platforms like 饭否 and Weibo stepped in (though not quite the same), I couldn’t help but feel that magnetic pull. (I even tried joining Weibo once, but that experiment didn’t quite work out!) After graduate school in the U.S., I joined Twitter—the only full-time offer (turned from my internship) I secured at the time. In retrospect, it felt destined. Twitter was not only my first job, but the only company where I’ve ever worked, and every single day was a chance to learn and grow. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I had, the brilliant colleagues from whom I learned so much, and the projects we undertook that made a real impact to the users across the globe. I am especially proud of leading the new Data Engineering team since the acquisition (now the X era). Together, we achieved so much despite limited resources and unseen challenges. I truly believe that X has weathered its toughest times, and the team has some of the most committed and talented engineers ready to drive the company toward rocket growth. I will be cheering them on from the sidelines going forward. Thank you, Twitter/X, for an unforgettable journey that I will forever cherish!

happy to announce that i'm officially the cofounder and cto of just words (YC W24), and i've partnered with @neha01mittal, an ex-tweep! this is our billboard in times square :) some of you may know that i've been working on a startup recently, but the truth is that i've been tinkering on all sort of ideas with many different people over the past year. after twitter 2.0, i didn't see myself working at another big tech company again, and after seeing what chatgpt can do, i didn't see myself being a software engineer for much longer either. in october, i applied to yc with a friend, and going through the interview was the most excited i had felt in months. i actually printed out my rejection letter from @daltonc and pinned it on my wall so that i'd remember how it felt. eventually, i decided that i needed to quit my job and go all-in. without a clear idea of what i wanted to do, my first goal was to keep my github green and hack every day. it was a great period of pure exploration, and i learned how to do front-end with swift, c#, and javascript and eventually how to sell the things you build. in march, i was tremendously lucky in reconnecting with neha, and it has been amazing getting to work with someone as talented as her. we do have exciting news to share soon, but for now, i'll just say that we're hiring ;) finally, my startup adventure would not have been possible without the support of my beautiful, brilliant wife, Mei. she's building quantum computers for @IonQ_Inc , which is as cool as it sounds. it took 6 months and change, but it has been an exciting start to a new career.

First two 🫡 @NegatedVoid I guess this means our Product Mixer vision was brought to fruition. Thanks and congrats to the remaining Tweeps who finished the job 💙

This has been a year full of engineering excellence that sometimes can go unnoticed. Besides all the visible changes you see on our app, here are some of the most important improvements we have made under the hood. - Consolidated the tech stacks for For you, Following, Search, Profiles, Lists, Communities and Explore around a singular product framework. - Completely rebuilt the For you serving and ranking systems from the ground up, resulting in a decrease 90% reduction in lines of code from 700K to 70K, a 50% decrease in our compute footprint, and an 80% increase in the throughput of posts scored per request. - Unified the For you and video personalization and ranking models, which significantly improved video recommendation quality. - Refactored the API middleware layer of our tech stack and in doing so simplified the architecture by removing more than 100K lines of code and thousands of unused internal endpoints and eliminating unadopted client services. - Reduced post metadata sourcing latency by 50%, and global API timeout errors by 90%. - Blocked bots and content scrapers at a rate +37% greater than 2022. On average, we prevent more than 1M bots signup attacks each day and we’ve reduced DM spam by 95%. - Shutdown the Sacramento data center and re-provisioned the 5,200 racks and 148,000 servers, which generated more than $100M in annual savings. In total, we freed up 48 MW of capacity and tore down 60k lbs. of network ladder rack before re-provisioning it to other data centers. - Optimized our usage of cloud service providers and began doing much more on-prem. This shift has reduced our monthly cloud costs by 60%. Among the changes we made was a shift of all media/blob artifacts out of the cloud, which reduced our overall cloud data storage size by 60%, and separately, we succeeded in reducing cloud data processing costs by 75%. - Built on-prem GPU Supercompute clusters and designed, developed, and delivered 43.2Tbps of new network fabric architecture to support the clusters. - Scaled network backbone capacity and redundancy, which resulted in $13.9M/year in savings. - Started automated peak traffic failover tests to validate the scalability and availability of the entire platform continuously.

@fredloh Yes! Can't wait for pattern matching for switch and more record pattern matching. Now if they would just add `val` on top of the `var` support...

Well, looks like Reddit pulled the plug a little early. Apollo started crashing, but I just manually revoked my token and it looks like it fixes the crashing, but no more Reddit access haha. Those folks are fun to the very end! 😛

@brentcodes I'm guessing, 'find an approach to verification that doesn't drive people bananas' is under identity / profile?
