I appreciated part 1 of @timallchin's series on the current state of BC, and I enjoyed part 2 as well. Tim raises fair points of critique for those who are and have used CIBC as a descriptive term. I'd love to see greater engagement like this happen across the board!

In 2024, the biblical counseling world was rocked by the "Zombie" narrative—the idea that a "clinically informed" stream was an internal infection threatening the movement. But what if that story is incomplete? Part 2 of my series on the future of BC is live. 🧵

PSA: Clinically-informed ≠ clinically-consumed. Instead, the clinically-informed biblical counselor is scripture-saturated, doctrinally-devoted, and Christ-centered (grace). Likewise, they’re competent in common grace applications (nature). Grace does not destroy nature.

This has been my experience with @BradHambrick as well. Thankful for this brother.
Tim Allchin@timallchin

@Pastor_Ken_CBC @DanielSylv1 @sevier_nick Brad Hambrick and I had a two hour lunch where we talked BC shop. He clarified and explained- I did the same- it was the “debate before the debate” over tacos- it was a delightful afternoon. He’s not nouthetic BC, but he’s closer than many think & humble enough to still learn.

CIBCers don't care about niceness. But we do care about truthfulness in how people are portrayed. @timallchin models this so well here. His refusal to caricature others speaks to his integrity and his intentionality in building relationships across the BC movement.
Tim Allchin@timallchin

"There's a move that keeps getting made in biblical counseling: if you're not classical BC, you're not a biblical counselor. No middle ground. No spectrum. That binary isn't working. New series starts today." @timallchin?utm_campaign=profile&utm_medium=profile-page" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@timallchin?ut…

Paging Biblical Counselors: I was asked a difficult question today and would love to hear from you: What is ONE book you would recommend to someone considering getting seminary-level training in biblical counseling? Not asking for a textbook-level book with tons of pages, but something easy to read and inspiring.

Biblical Counselors: If you take upon yourself the responsibility of your client’s sanctification, which belongs to God alone, you will eventually adopt a legalistic ethos in an attempt to maintain control. This will end in anxiety and despair for both you and your client.

As a personal update, this morning I was officially installed as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament in the URCNA and as pastor of counseling and teaching at Cornerstone United Reformed Church. Thankful for the privilege to minister among these dear saints!

I need some feedback from church leaders & Christian/biblical counselors to add some anecdotal research for an upcoming conference talk. In your experience, what are the primary factors that strain the relationship between local churches and counseling organizations?

@jasonkovacs I only discovered this rule change through co-writing projects with Bekah Hannah. Much to her annoyance, I found double-spacing incredibly hard to unlearn.

I just read a document my wife wrote and told her she doesn't have to double-space after every period. She didn't believe me and looked it up! She is blown away 😂

This Alan Jacobs quote from 15 years ago continues to grow truer with each passing year.
Andy Jones@beingandyjones

Came across this quote from Alan Jacobs in the minutes of #PCAGA in 2011: "I have thought a lot about why people get so hostile online, and I have come to believe it is primarily because we live in a society with a hypertrophied sense of justice and an atrophied sense of humility and charity, to put the matter in terms of the classic virtues. In our online debates, we not only fail to cultivate charity and humility, we come to think of them as vices: forms of weakness that compromise our advocacy. And so we go forth to war with one another."

Parents, one of the surest ways to teach your children the Gospel is to ask them to forgive you when you sin against them. Let them know that you need God's grace too. Children don't need perfect parents; they need humble parents who show them the way to God's throne of grace.

@jaredcwilson Since mid-life is currently experienced by GenXers like me, I'd say option 1 looks like it's trying too hard. Option 2 says, "I get you. You're subdued and kind of over it all, but are still looking for some gospel hope!"
