I appreciate thoughtful assessments like this. I appreciate the critiques Pastor Tim offers of me and the CIBC approach. bradhambrick.com/renewed/

I spent some time thinking and writing today about how the Clinically-Informed stream of biblical counseling became a thing - what do you think? Why did biblical counselors think that a modifier was needed? Made good progress today on my second article in my series - "The Movement I Signed Up For and the Future of Biblical Counseling" It will constructively challenge CIBC on some areas of needed growth. Drops next week! You can sign up to receive it here: @timallchin?utm_campaign=profile&utm_medium=profile-page" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@timallchin?ut…

@LowerLeavell Future articles in the series will challenge some of the weakness I see on CIBC side too, but we need to talk to each other to sharpen each other, and sadly that has almost stopped. We could be allies, but too many have made enemies. I still hope to see a more unified BC movement

My honest fear with this article series is that it will be virtually dismissed and ignored by those who read it and need balanced counterpoint the most. I would very much like to be wrong so I hope it isn't just read, but respectfully engaged with and prayerfully considered on the level it deserves. This should be invited to be a featured article series by ACBC and Tim should be a guest on Truth in Love with Dale Johnson to discuss. @acbc @TDaleJohnson

@sevier_nick @praximtheology Glad that you read it! I heeded the recent call for a more serious dialogue about CIBC- I hope it is received that way- and can spur sincere conversations about an important topic.

"CIBC puts the Bible at the center and uses clinical awareness to apply biblical teaching. Integration puts clinical psych at the center and uses the Bible only as a guardrail. Calling those the same thing requires you to ignore what people actually believe about their own work."

@DanielSylv1 @Pastor_Ken_CBC @sevier_nick What you might help me see is why removing integrationist language, which we both would agree is a good thing, is needed to be brought “into the light” as integrity issues? Are they deceptively becoming more biblical? I’m genuinely confused. What purpose would publicizing serve?

@Pastor_Ken_CBC @timallchin @sevier_nick Brother, I was busy. This is an argument from ignorance. I don't interact with everything. My point stands that I see lack of integrity in a quiet shift in language. I hope that those who see this bring it into the light.

I'm starting to see Clinically Informed and Trauma Informed counselors change their websites and bios to show less "integrative" language. It's happening quietly and subtly and it's a shame to see. If this is you, I'd encourage you to clarify your shift with integrity.

@Pastor_Ken_CBC @DanielSylv1 @sevier_nick Brad Hambrick and I had a two hour lunch where we talked BC shop. He clarified and explained- I did the same- it was the “debate before the debate” over tacos- it was a delightful afternoon. He’s not nouthetic BC, but he’s closer than many think & humble enough to still learn.

@timallchin @DanielSylv1 @sevier_nick What a concept - dialoguing with brothers. And it helped. Who knew? Seriously, not surprised you took that biblical and productive approach. May your tribe increase.

@Pastor_Ken_CBC @DanielSylv1 @sevier_nick I was more suspicious of CIBC till I grabbed lunch with enough of them to ask my questions and productively dialogue. We hosted a lunch at SBC and coffee shop for BC at TGC. I wish more BC leaders were better friends. Stories>stickers

Sounds like using any ACBC counselors in abuse cases would be gross negligence to me.
Neeva Walters@neeva_walters

Direct quote from an @acbc exam prep course: “The articles & the information on abuse in ACBC is still in it’s adolescence, it’s still being developed. So stay tuned.” So hundreds of people in abusive situations have been counseled with a protocol “still being developed.”

@brmorris You can certainly find examples of ACBC counselors who mishandled abuse cases, and ACBC teachers who lacked the experience to educate well, but the new standards of care regarding abuse has helped ACBC counselors have a better plan for handling abuse cases.

@brmorris There has always been training on abuse within ACBC training centers and conferences. However, ACBC knew they need more and clearer standards than existed in the past. Like AACC and many other organizations, they updated and improved their standards of care. It is a good thing.

@DanielSylv1 I love when we get clinical counselors in trainings, because they get excited about biblical counseling. We have several clinical practices that require their counselors to take biblical counseling training from us. For christians counselors, it changes the way they think.

@DanielSylv1 It's actually more of a professional risk — one that limits how and where they practice, what insurance panels will accept, and how their peers view them. My guess is they aren't drifting further away from Scripture. They're drifting toward it, often at real cost.
