🇩🇪🇫🇷 France may withdraw from the joint French-German tank development project MGCS (Main Ground Combat System). This was stated by Rheinmetall's CEO, Armin Papperger, who noted that a final decision has not yet been made, but such a risk exists. According to Papperger, France is considering a significant budget cut, which could reduce expenses to less than half of what was originally planned. He also added that the companies involved in the project — Rheinmetall, KNDS, and Thales — have received only 25 million euros in funding since the project's inception. The MGCS program, launched in 2017 to replace the German Leopard 2 and French Leclerc tanks, has been postponed multiple times. This uncertainty arose shortly after the collapse of the joint fighter project, FCAS, which further strains French-German defense cooperation.

Germany: « Unlike those arrogant French, we believe in a truly European approach to major defence projects » Also Germany: « Let me introduce our latest achievement: the GERMAN A400M »
Airbus Defence@AirbusDefence

Always a fan favourite at #ILA26: the German #A400M 🇩🇪✈️ The German Air Force operates the largest A400M fleet in the world. They contribute vital airlift capabilities and are a key asset of force projection in international @NATO missions. Airbus is currently exploring additional capabilities for this advanced military transport aircraft, such as: ➡️ Extending its cargo capacity from 37 to 40 tonnes. ➡️ Using it as a mothership for drones. ➡️ Implementing satellite-based navigation. ➡️ Equipping it with a modular firefighting kit.

I‘m a friend of France 🇫🇷 I want a strong France - as a strong and close ally. But France doesn’t grow stronger when it blows its budget because it wants to develope an extremely costly fighter jet all on its own - just because it’s unwilling to share control.

"Made in China" was long a byword for poor quality in the West, and yet subtly this phrase has come to resemble an increasingly choking collar around our necks. The growing trade deficit that Macron seeks to adress is likely only the tip of an iceberg we will not find easy to evade. Here we see the folly of globalism in Europe - imagining some past or future state to be a permanent equilibrum, European countries surrendered a large part of their ability for unilateral action, which was precisely the thing able to keep the powers who had found themselves in an advantegous position from exploiting the system for their own zero-sum gains. As the curtains slowly close on the global rules based order, these powers, China perhaps chief among them, will try to cash in on those advantages. While we certainly wish the best possible luck to Macron in fighting that, one has difficulty imagining that this Gordian knot can be unwound without a sword.

Should we have said, a few months ago, that a Pakistani J-10 shot down a "French Rafale"? No, they shot down an "Indian Rafale", because it was owned by India and not the damn French Air Force. /3

French aviation Twitter is genuinely absurd at his point man. Mfs are outraged over this tweet making up schizo theories of Airbus claiming the entire A400M program is German, while they simply called a German Air Force A400M "German". That's it. /1

When looking at the dominance of the American F-35 in European hangars, continental critics often blame individual nations for choosing foreign hardware over European options. The uncomfortable reality is that Europe has nobody to blame but itself, and by completely failing to produce an indigenous 5th generation fighter, it left frontline nations with no choice. Smaller countries directly bordering Russia cannot afford to gamble on a deficit in the skies. When nations like Finland, with a population of just 5,6 million, procure a fighter fleet, those airframes must remain qualitatively superior to Russia’s for decades. The F-35 was quite literally the only option on the market guaranteed to maintain a decisive edge over Moscow and Beijing well into the mid-century. Current European 4th generation platforms like the Rafale or Gripen are already facing a narrowing operational advantage today, and their long-term development potential is heavily capped, leaving them poorly equipped for the highly contested airspace of the 2040s and 2050s. Furthermore, relying on European alternatives introduces severe sovereign risks. None of the current continental jets outside of the French Rafale are ITAR-free, which means Washington still holds a defense export veto over them. Turning fully to France is an equally massive gamble, given Paris’ history of low aid to Ukraine and the looming domestic political instability that threatens to disrupt its defense alignment after 2027. The industrial outlook remains equally bleak. Massive capital and collective expertise are needed to build a viable 6th generation platform, yet the ending of the Franco-German FCAS program proves Europe is still paralyzed by industrial infighting. While the British-Italian-Japanese program shows some promise, it is not a purely European endeavor. Without immediate, unified, and unprecedented financial mobilization, the United States is poised to entirely outpace the continent on the 6th generation, leaving a fragmented Europe trapped in a dependency loop of its own making
