When parents bring their kids and they get to meet comic book characters in-person–it's moments like these that are StocktonCon founder Mike Millerick’s favorite after he launched this in 2012, originally at the University of Pacific. Millerick wanted to build something for the Stockton and Lodi community. It’s grown into four events in Stockton and Lodi throughout the year, where kids under 12 attend for free with an adult. It’s a ‘second home’ for many in Stockton.

After the Saint Mary’s Rams Girls Basketball team took home a record 23rd San Joaquin Section title, it was back to the fundamentals and 2-hour practice at their home gym in Stockton. I was invited to the practice and went to get answers on what this means for the school and community – along with the history made as alumna and head coach Alle Moreno says this was also the first time in history two women head coaches played each other in this D1 section title. Gas ⛽ prices at $2.79 for vehicles using the alternative ethanol (E85 fuel) at this Tracy National Gas Station. With gas prices on the rise throughout California, I talked to a Tracy resident to get his thoughts. As my family and I drive through San Joaquin County, we’ve been noticing the incredible blooms throughout so many almond trees. This is an important crop for this county and the state. Mike Weststeyn, an almond farmer, told me almonds make up 80% of the world’s production. It’s also a $5 billion industry in California and that triples with the economic output and ripple effect, according to UC Agricultural Issues Center director Daniel A. Sumner. In San Joaquin County - it’s the second largest crop. With rain forecasted this week, it could impact almond farming during their crucial blooming season over these next few weeks. And interestingly enough, bees play a major role in almond farming with Weststeyn having two beehives per acre. If it rains, bees don't fly. If they don't fly, they don't pollinate. I also spoke with 81-year-old Kattie Cephus, a member of the Manteca Senior Center, who grew up in the Civil Rights era - in segregated Gulfport, Mississippi - and moved to California when she was 18. ‘Twas a joy to cover a Super Bowl community event in Stockton at one of its hidden gems - the Stockton Sailing Club. One Stocktonian didn’t even know this place existed until he entered his chili into the contest and now wants to get a membership. It’s the club’s annual cookoff and - it was an honor to share their story on why this is so meaningful to them and firefighters, beyond the game and the chili. This is one of the many reasons why I enjoy community journalism and to cover stories that matter to people throughout Stockton and San Joaquin County.

People from all over Stockton and the East Bay made their way to what’s known as a hidden gem in Stockton to celebrate the Super Bowl in a unique way – at the Stockton Sailing Club. It’s just about an hour-and-a-half east drive of Santa Clara, where the Super Bowl was held on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium (depending on traffic, of course).
