@wanksley @RJupiter7 Yeah I don’t think it’s the #1 thing to focus on but I still think it can ruin your immersion into a story if it’s noticeably bad, just like in the example I gave from dragon ball where everybody got taken out of the scene by asking “wtf why is this happening”

@cunctum @RJupiter7 for sure you should aim for a level of consistency, i just think it's not a big priority compared to stuff like character work, themes. especially in a genre where there's always some absurdly convoluted magic system or overfocus on worldbuilding at the expense of everything else

@wanksley @RJupiter7 Also when I say powerscaling, I don’t mean “who’s stronger character A or character B” I mean are the levels of strength between the characters consistent? is the power system consistent, making sense and not breaking its own logical rules? Things like that.

@wanksley @RJupiter7 I never said that’s all there is to storytelling, it’s a minor part of the story but knowing how strong the characters are relative to each other in a battle shonen is important to the logic of the story. Just like how everyone freaked out when Goku turned blue against krillin

@ManasA071558920 @wanksley @RJupiter7 Whether it’s a battle shonen technically or not, it’s still important in a series with consistent fighting to know how strong the characters are relative to each other, and for the power system to make sense. Fair point though about the character moments being the memorable part

In terms of analytical numbers I think OP is undeniably more popular but just as someone who talks to people and goes into stores, Naruto is more commonly seen/talked about imo

@RJupiter7 true because it's unnecessary. a story isn't a battle simulation where you set up all these fixed parameters and then hit "play". powerscaling is something for you to fight with your friends about, not something the writer should be concerned with.
