This is horrifying. Kurds attempting to celebrate Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, have been attacked by racist Arabs in Rojava, Syria. One of our greatest concerns regarding the imposition of a terrorist-led regime has always been the preservation of Kurdish culture, identity, and basic rights. Acts of violence such as these do not bode well for the prospects of peace, dignity, or genuine coexistence in the region. Kurds played a central role in the fight to free Syria, and the world, from the brutality of ISIS terror. They should not be subjected to hatred or violence simply for wishing to peacefully celebrate their culture and identity. No people should be punished for expressing who they are.

YPJ: Dissolved? Or joining Syria’s new army? Spokesperson Roxana Muhammad says the Women’s Protection Units are in talks with Damascus about joining the new Syrian army. They aren't looking to disappear. Instead, they want to change how the military works from the inside. Muhammad argues that without women, the army stays stuck in a cycle of theft and violence. For a real transformation in Syria, she says women’s self-defense must be part of the system.

Imad, from Afrin, told RIC: “We are a family of eight. It has been eight years of displacement: from Afrin to Shehba, then to Tabqa, then to Heseke, and later to Derik. Our house was destroyed since the region was first occupied. The Hamza Division was controlling our area. I had 180 olive trees. Last summer I managed to go [to Afrin], but they left nothing. They were all cut. When I go back, of course I will plant olive trees again. We cannot live without olive trees. Of course, to go back to our land, we are happy.”
