In our Hindu society, especially in My Banjara community, people still give a lot of importance to caste. I realized this clearly during a conversation I had just 30 minutes ago. I was talking to my friend’s father. His daughter, Alka, has a good job in Pune & earns about ₹30k a month. During our chat Uncle casually asked me, "Beta Aruhi, when are you planning to get married?" I replied.."My papa are looking for a Boy. As soon as we find a gud match I will get married". After talking for a bit I asked him, "Uncle ji, what about Alka? When are you planning her marriage?" He said " beta,As soon as we find a gud boy from our Banjara community we will get her married." Again I asked, "What if you find a gud boy who is Hindu but from a different community/cast ? Would that be okay?" He answered firmly.."No beta. We only want a boy from the Banjara community. No one else." I said..Uncle ji but it might take a long time to find a boy like that". He replied without any doubt, "Even if it takes five years, we only want a Banjara Hindu boy." His daughter all ready 25 yrs old Now I realised..It doesn't matter how educated, successful /modern a person becomes in our hindu society, caste is still the most important thing when it comes to marriage.
