The Netflix IPO was exactly 21 years ago today.
We had done it!
We had turned an envelope and a Patsy Cline CD into a publicly traded company.
It was the sort of success we’d all hoped for, the thing that we had promised the people who had invested their money in us. And had held out as a reward for those who had invested their time.
But it was a milestone, not an endpoint. I went back to work the next day. We still had Blockbuster and Walmart to fight. Streaming and proprietary content were still years in the future. But at least now, we had the resources to do those things right.
If anything, May 23, 2002 was the day that Netflix finally grew up.
