I feel like seeing fans take creative liberty to their favorite (or least favorite) characters is exciting from the authors perspective and might influence how they choose to write characters in the future #diglit6440

"fanfiction may afford an exploration of gender, sexuality,or race that is often underrepresented or underserved" So many times fanfics narrow in on a supporting character who's purpose is to make books more diverse and is finally given a story in the way they deserve #diglit6440

It is so cool how fan fictions can move onto the big screen (like the Netflix series After which was originally a Harry Styles fan fiction on Wattpad!!) #diglit6440

Not only do fan fiction sites include reading and writing, but they're communities based on shared interests and genre as seen in comment sections and when fan fiction reactions shift over to other platforms (tiktok/goodreads/twitter etc) #diglit6440

@MissAlexiSmith An option could be that students create a group snap story where they can all contribute uploading posts and this can be a way for students to write a joint story via snapchat (never seen it done but🤷‍♀️) #diglit6440

@hartman_bekah When I read the part about snaps being limited to 10 seconds I had to find out when the article was written because so much has changed since 2017, just as a lot has changed when it first came out in 2011. The ever evolving nature of media is wild #diglit6440

I found it interesting that the article was only written 5 years ago and already social media has shifted. Snapchat is behind instagram and tictok in usage. I can understand why it hard to implement these in academics with the constant shifting of what is popular. #diglit6440

If you are assigning a twitter or tiktok or other social media assignment, how do you approach students that have parental restrictions on social apps or no access to the needed technology? #diglit6440

I have seen so many school projects on tiktok that remind me of how students used to use youtube to post educational skits years ago. It's nice to see students have the option to make creative content for a class! #diglit6440

It's so interesting how social media apps evolve based on previous ones (vine-tiktok, myspace-facebook etc). It could be fun for students to design for a new app based on what draws people in and noticing what needs to be changed #diglit6440

@KatieWickes It was the bare minimum but honestly helpful! I remember (in third grade?) they talked about the creepy people that can catfish/steal your identity and that really stuck with me

Did you have a teacher discuss internet safety with you?

@KatieWickes I think this partially depends on who is introducing digital tools first, but it should be brought up in both environments - especially because different digital tools are usually prioritized

As educators, it seems daunting to keep up with these changes, but this is one of the many (many) areas where learning is a two way street and our students - who are better acclimated with newer digital literacies - can help out #diglit6440

Time is great to consider with the model of connected learning in terms of effort being put in by both educators/students, but I think it is something that isn’t considered when making time for student’s mental health or interests outside of school #diglit6440

Connected learning and digital literacies allow students to explore and share their own interests in the classroom with each other (Autonomy of action), not just the instructor making mass decisions of what they think students should hear #diglit6440

So important to change the concept of what "meaningful work" is! Totally should not solely be measured in assignments or grades, but rather dialogue and experience. #diglit6440
