Another way to bump up student engagement in the classroom is the use of video games - games in general- but to build critical lit skills and a new mode of thinking try video games! #educ6440
My final reflection from my readings for this week: how can I select texts that avoid a western only narrative? How are we going to make sure we teach our students to look at perspective and power that is at play? How can we be intentional in this? Any thoughts? #diglit6440
Another reading from this week has me thinking all about networking w/i media. Makes me wonder how I can create a network within media for my students? Who would I invite, how could I integrate that network into lessons, how could they take ownership over our network? #diglit6440
We need to make sure we are integrating and carving out time for critical literacy conversations as it relates to digital media participation!! #diglit6440
Something to consider in connected reading is EVALUATION! A way to push students’ thinking within digital literacies/print is to ask deeper thinking questions. This can also create some intrinsic motivation - they can see the why behind what they are doing.
An example of how you could integrate digital literacy into the classroom in combination with collaboration, culturally responsive work, critical thinking, influence, and evaluation.
Some concepts to ponder w/ dig literacies:
1. Are the texts we’re using relevant to our students?
2) Are we giving space for a transactional classroom?
3) How can we have student’s see their influence in the world?
4) Are we giving them autonomy?
We need to make sure we are remembering how impactful interest and support can be within the realms of digital literacies! These two things create much more diversity and opportunity among/for our students!
Another way to integrate critical literacy into your classroom: LOOK AT MEDIA AROUND YOU! This creates space for our students to share their voice, evaluate media, connect to critical thinking and critical literacy, and create questions. Here is an example from Aimee Hendrix- Soto:
We can open up our student’s minds, their agency, and their ownership of learning when we integrate multiliteracies in our classrooms. This allows a new POV for us a teachers to see how students are taking in their world today and what they are learning in class. It’s the perfect:
Some thoughts on how to engage 21st century learners in ELA:
- produce/evaluate images
- produce/evaluate social media content
- produce/evaluate graphics
- use tech to write
- add in visual literacy to lessons
