Who eats who—or indeed, whom—in fresh water? Allow us to explain the difference between a food web, a food chain and trophic levels—and what that means in a lake… (It's definitely whom, by the way...) bit.ly/3ma5hoP

Please check out this MSc position with @fen_fatale and I! An amazing combination of Northwest Territories-base field research on caribou forage recovery and fun with lichens in the greenhouse 👇
Catherine Dieleman@fen_fatale

The @forestecogrp is hiring a two-year based MSc position leading an exciting study linking caribou winter forage re-establishment trends, permafrost, and wildfire in the Northwest Territories Canada. It has got it all! If you love lichen this is the position for you.

Here's a new @GWF_pubs from our @GWFutures work on a cyano bloom affected reservoir. The reservoir was originally built to ensure summer river flows. It's used by many people. Increases in extreme rainfall now make toxin-producing blooms occur earlier in the summer.

Conditions that cause a toxin-producing cyanobacteria bloom came early because of a v large rain event - these events are expected to become more frequent. Thus "effectively elongating the bloom season period of potential toxicity" @GWFutures

Preprint is out for our study on phytoplankton blooms at @IISD_ELA! Long-term monitoring data + process-oriented modeling reveal interactions between higher temps and external fertilization, resulting in higher blooms. Collab w/ @JJVenky @couturerm & Twitterless others

Plenary speaker Dr. Jason Venkiteswaran @JJVenky @Laurier presented a fascinating re-analysis of long-term trends in algal biomass from one of the best-studied artificially fertilized lakes, Lake 227 @IISD_ELA. Funded by @formbloom #algae #bloom #lake

Intersting findings by Dr. Megan Larsen @Laurier about the role of precipitation - and subsequent pulse of phosphorus - can stimulate harmful algal blooms; a rainfall event in 2017 increased phosphorus 35x in Conestogo Lake, Ontario #ifhab19 @JJVenky

Water: We drink it. We swim in it. We farm with it. We waste it. Canadians use a lot of water, but we have less of it than you think. Research from #Laurier is informing – and preparing – Canadians about the changes that may lie ahead #EarthDay
