TransNamib’s board has approved a six-month trial of a dual-fuel locomotive powered by hydrogen and diesel, as the rail operator tests lower-emission alternatives to its diesel fleet. The pilot, to be conducted in partnership with CMB.TECH, will run for around 50 return trips along the Walvis Bay–Windhoek corridor, a key route for Namibia’s freight movement. Chief Executive Officer Desmond van Jaarsveld said the trial will determine whether hydrogen technology can operate effectively under local conditions. The locomotive will be assessed on fuel consumption, reliability, operational efficiency, maintenance requirements and overall cost-effectiveness, with a decision on potential expansion to follow after the trial period. thebrief.com.na/2026/04/transn… #namibia #locomotives #dieselfleet #walvisbay #windhoek @transnamib @CMB_TECH @QBBT @rudolphmuller @sigstart

The 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 was convened in Windhoek on the 11-12 March 2026. In 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 2025, the Government of the Republic of Namibia announced that the country had been invited to participate in the CIF ( 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬) 𝐔𝐒$1 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 (𝐈𝐃𝐏). Following this milestone, the Government launched a 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 2025, which attracted close to 148 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 by the closing date in February 2026. Hosted by the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme (NGH2P) under the leadership of the @NPC_Namibia, the workshop served as a key platform to align project developers, Government institutions, and international financial partners on the pathway toward investment readiness. The Director General of the National Planning Commission, Amb. Dr. Kaire Mbuende, emphasised that the CIF IDP represents a strategic opportunity for Namibia to accelerate economic diversification and industrial transformation, while mobilising up to US$250 million in concessional climate finance to support low-carbon industrial development and infrastructure expansion aligned with NDP6 priorities. Over 250 participants attended the first day of the workshop, including project applicants, as well as representatives from the Climate Investment Funds, the World Bank, the African Development Bank Group , and the IFC - International Finance Corporation. Together, these engagements are helping to build a strong pipeline of bankable green industrial projects, ranging from mineral beneficiation and #low-carbon #manufacturing to clean energy infrastructure and hydrogen-based value chains. 🎥 Watch the clip below of the NPC Director General speaking on NBC News during the workshop. #GreenIndustrialisation

Namibia is set to launch its first green hydrogen-powered heavy-duty freight locomotive later this year, according to CMB.TECH. The project is being spearheaded by CMB.TECH Namibia in partnership with TransNamib Holdings Limited and Africa Global Logistics. The locomotive is currently being assembled at the facilities of Traxtion, a South African rail engineering and refurbishment specialist. “Hydrogen-powered rail freight is coming to Namibia later this year. CMB.TECH Namibia, together with TransNamib and Africa Global Logistics, is developing Namibia's first heavy-duty freight locomotive, powered by locally produced green hydrogen,” CMB.TECH said. The locomotive will operate on the Walvis Bay–Windhoek freight corridor during a trial phase, completing 50 return trips between the Port of Walvis Bay and the container depot near Windhoek. The route spans 414 kilometres, rising from 6 metres above sea level at the coast to 1,601 metres in the Namibian highlands. thebrief.com.na/2026/03/namibi… #namibia #greenhydrogen #locomotive #railsector @EUinNamibia @GAH2Summit @gh2namibia @ahpafrica @transnamib

🔔 NOTICE: Deadline Extension – Call for Industrial Decarbonisation Project Proposals The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme (NGH2P) is pleased to announce an extension to the submission deadline for project proposals under Namibia’s Sectoral Transformation Investment Plan (s-TIP), developed in partnership with the Climate Investment Funds (CIF). 📅 New Deadline: 1 February 2026 at 23:59 CAT This extension aims to give more organisations and innovators the opportunity to participate, prepare strong proposals, and contribute to Namibia’s industrial decarbonisation efforts across key hard-to-abate sectors. We encourage all public-private and private project developers, whether at conceptual, early-phase, or advanced stages, to review the full details in the attached notice and submit proposals aligned with Namibia’s ambition to unlock up to USD 250 million in catalytic capital for decarbonisation initiatives. 👉 Please read the full announcement and the sector eligibility overview in the attached poster. It outlines thematic areas such as cement, steel, chemicals, shipping, eco-industrial parks, clean-tech supply chains and more. To those who have already submitted, please be assured that your proposals remain recorded and valid, no resubmission is required. For enquiries, kindly reach out to the contacts listed in the notice. Let’s build a greener, more competitive industrial future for Namibia. 🌍💡 #GreenHydrogen #Decarbonisation #CIF #Namibia #IndustrialTransformation #SustainableDevelopment #NGH2P #EnergyTransition
