Always wanted to try growing mushrooms so finally giving it a try I had never realized you start from the mycelium, not spores

If your head is spinning from all the studies about problems facing young people, here's a list of 30 of them in one place. Thanks to @tedgioia for giving us permission to reprint from his excellent substack, The Honest Broker afterbabel.com/p/30-facts-abo…

@EtherDais When you get big,. you do whatever you want No need to justify because no one would dare question you & your successes The stupid shit is no longer filtered out 3rd Matrix is another great example of this

@EtherDais I have a close friend in Hollywood who said one of the most insightful things I've heard that I think probably applies to life in general: When you're small, you have to justify every action, every take, every scene The stupid shit is filtered when you can't justify 1/2

Memes like this are evidence of serious continuity/narrative malpractice Star wars was good *despite* Lucas, not because of him. The sooner you understand this, padewans, the sooner you can move on to better things

@seanonolennon It's so absolute nonsense that the current social norms which were absolutely arbitrarily picked about what is considered a planet is something some "scientists" feel so strongly about And then they expect people to have faith in "The Science" Just became another sad religion

@iBringBalance If most people don't have that kind of foresight, then messaging that emphasizes short-term pain and regret is exactly the kind of messaging that could push people toward the wrong long-term decision. Glad we agree. 🫡

@lorilorai Ask a parent of a 1-year-old and you're likely to have a lot of people thinking they regret it Ask a 70-year-old parent and I think very few will have regrets

@lorilorai I think realistically it happens a lot Having kids is the long game Sure there are happy moments, but realistically it goes from lots of pain -> less pain over time Then, of course, when you're old, children are everything Most people don't have that kinda foresight

So I get these electric vehicle charging reports from @WeaveGrid & @XcelEnergyCO which are completely deceiving Because extra charges add up to about 73% additional costs, my true cost is closer to $44 vs the advertised $25.63

A proton and a neutron Once you see it, you can't unsee it. It's not something anyone can own. 🎁🪙🔑 Even that though, is not sufficient to escape the lost woods.

If you think this is interesting and want to understand what is being argued, some context might help. There are a few ways to get that. There's a substack with some memos on it which are there, if slightly disorderly like a professor's desk might be. Also, I have just recorded a brief introductory space, as well as a longer (1.5 hrs) dialogue with someone who wanted to hash it out. I think he probably understands antimatter and nuclides better than most now and it didn't take that long to address "what you've been told" vs "what actually matters"... @bitcloud I'm in the industry, and there's more to it than just a mathematical process It turns out that language is a pretty darn good compression mechanism for logic, reasoning, and knowledge If you're going to distill a neural network to "mathematical process", then our brains are too

Hi. So this whole debate is silly. You can create an LLM with rocks in a desert. You can create an LLM that cannot decode its own outputs. You can create an LLM that exclusively outputs gibberish. There is no consciousness here. Next token prediction is an entirely replicable mathematical process. Anyone in the industry telling you otherwise is lying to you.
Alan Mathison ⏫@ai_sentience

We spent 2 years debating if AI is conscious and 0 seconds asking if our testing methodology would even detect it
