THE HOME OFFICE LOST THE CHILDREN A whistleblower went to work for Mitie, a private contractor paid by your government to look after unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. What they saw was so bad they had to tell someone. Criminal gangs were parking outside the hotel. Children were being bundled into cars off the street. The whistleblower estimated 10% of children in one hotel were disappearing every single week. Some were trafficked as far as Manchester and Scotland. This was not a one-off. Police had already warned the Home Office (@ukhomeoffice). Repeatedly. The government knew vulnerable children without parents were being targeted by trafficking networks. They were warned. They carried on. By the time the Observer broke the story in January 2023, 136 children had been reported missing from just one hotel in Brighton. Of those, 79 were still unaccounted for. Immigration minister Robert Jenrick (@RobertJenrick) then confirmed the national figure: 440 unaccompanied children had vanished from government hotels since July 2021. 200 were still missing. 13 of them were under 16. The government's position, delivered with a straight face, was that they lacked the legal power to stop children from leaving hotels. Nobody was suggesting locking them in. They were asking for basic safeguarding. A locked front door. An adult who knows where the children are. Mitie, the contractor running the hotels, was billing the taxpayer while gangs worked the pavement outside. Mitie's response to the whistleblower's concerns? Those concerns, according to ministers, had apparently not been passed on. This is what institutional failure looks like when it happens to children nobody wants to claim responsibility for. The police told the Home Office. The Home Office told Mitie. The children disappeared. A worker risked their job to raise the alarm. The institutions they warned did not act fast enough to protect a single child. That whistleblower deserves to be remembered. The children they tried to protect deserve to be found. A 20-year-old man from Preston has been charged with two counts of rape after a woman was allegedly raped at Preston Bus Station. Abisalom Tesfai, of Wildman Street, Preston, was arrested following the incident which happened in the early hours of Saturday 18 April 2026, between 5.30am and 6.30am. Police were called at 6.46am and the male toilets at the bus station were cordoned off during the investigation. Tesfai has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court. Lancashire Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time to contact them on 101, quoting log 284 of 18 April.

Her experiences form part of a wider pattern of abuse that affected at least 1,400 children in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. Sarah’s ordeal began when she was just 11 years old. One night, a 30-year-old man raped her in a school playground. The trauma left her overwhelmed with shame, confusion and fear. She had little understanding of what had happened, only a sense that her life had been irreversibly changed. Her abuse did not end there. Over the following years, she was systematically groomed and exploited. She was given alcohol and drugs, transported across the country, and repeatedly raped by multiple men. Throughout this time, her situation was largely ignored by authorities. Sarah later reflected on how little control she had over her own life: “I didn’t have a say on how I was going to turn out because my abusers had that say. That was up to them, how my life was going to be.” As a child, Sarah was vulnerable. She was bullied at school and struggled to make friends. When older girls invited her to spend time with them, she accepted, seeking a sense of belonging. One of these girls introduced her to older men, setting her on a path that would lead to years of abuse.

Paul Ockelton, from Innsworth, near Gloucester, denied sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 but was found guilty following a four-day trial in March. The former Liberal Democrat member who represented Innsworth on Tewkesbury Borough Council, was jailed for 18 months. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years and made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order. Ockelton carried out his assault in November 2021. He sat his victim on his lap and asked her "do you like this?" while he carried out the assault, the court was told. Ockelton denied he had touched her inappropriately, claiming he had been tickling her tummy and brushing her hair, but a jury rejected his defence. The victim’s mum told the court: “I am saddened that my daughter's wellbeing and confidence has been so badly shattered by his actions. “No-one has the right to touch my daughter and it is something that will affect her for the rest of her life. She is the most amazing and beautiful little girl.” Det Sgt Grace Craddock, of Gloucestershire Police, praised the girl’s bravery. “The child victim in this case has been unbelievably brave by letting her parents know what Ockelton had done to her,” she said. “The strength shown by her family throughout this difficult process too has been incredible, and I commend them for working with us to ensure Ockelton has been convicted and now sentenced for his offending.” Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Liberal Democrat leader Richard Stanley said it was a “shocking and disturbing case” and the authority’s thoughts are with the victim. “To be clear, Mr Ockelton withheld the fact that there were ongoing proceedings during his application process to stand as a councillor,”
