‘China’s gaokao factories and America’s college-industrial complex are not accidents. They are the logical outcome of a global system that has mistaken education for investment and human life for capital.’ My essay in the London Review of Books: lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/…

This week on @SinicaPodcast, guest host @izading speaks w/ @deb_seligsohn from COP30 in Belém about China's role at COP, the real story behind the 2007 Beijing air quality monitor, why China leads on technology but not negotiation, and the outcomes of the conference. Link below.

“Goodbye, Gibbon” (theideasletter.org/essay/goodbye-…) is an essay I had the quiet pleasure of writing for The Ideas Letter from the @OpenSociety. In which I offer my non-answer to the question “Is America in decline from a Chinese perspective?” I conclude: “We should be careful not to let a question turn into a prophecy. Rises and falls need not be an inter-civilizational zero-sum struggle, however seductive Thucydides’ lair may seem. Rather than getting swept up in the collective effervescence of status anxiety, only to look for an elixir in the intellectual Viagra of declinism, perhaps we should forget Gibbon.”

Brilliant essay by @izading in @TheIdeasLetter "Rather than getting swept up in the collective effervescence of status anxiety, only to look for an elixir in the intellectual Viagra of declinism, perhaps we should forget Gibbon." Shouldn't need China to improve ourselves 1/2
