The Ministry of Defence has lost track of most of the 95,000 veterans on its strategic reserve recall list. These ex-service personnel are still legally required to return to duty if a national emergency is declared. Officials admit they no longer hold up-to-date contact details or locations for the vast majority, especially those discharged over six years ago. Under the current system, the MoD only sends tracking letters for the first six years after leaving service. Lord George Robertson, former NATO chief and Defence Secretary, warned this situation leaves UK national security in peril as regular forces have shrunk to around 70,000. The government is now acting through the Armed Forces Bill to raise the recall age to 65 and fix reservist data issues.
