There is no future for urbanism in America, zero, if we don’t overcome the partisan divide in enforcing public safety. No drugs, no encampments, no vandalism, no theft sprees, no fencing, no vagrancy. Fail at that, and welcome the new urban flight.
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

I don't think borrowing architecture from Europe will move the needle on American support for housing construction. Instead, we just have to make our cities better places to live. noahpinion.blog/p/will-america…

@emissionite @verymidengineer @UrbanCourtyard 1) fentanyl itself is a spawn of the war on drugs due to the criminalization of heroin. 2) retail theft is a function of poverty and inflation, and it targets the very same corporations that drive these phenomena. Also no one is fleeing the city because of retail theft jfc

The message of Xi Jinping is simple: the Chinese Communist Party runs the economy to benefit the people rather than the oligarchs. As a firm believer in liberal democracy, I would dispute this logic. But we need an answer to it. And we don’t have a strong one right now.

Israel has been committing a genocide in Gaza and is now committing ethnic cleansing in Lebanon. Ending funding isn't enough — we need sanctions.

@stogachess @HeerJeet @ryangrim It’s not about who is in the White House. Trump sucks but there are plenty of receipts showing Democrats wanted this war too. Hillary made it part of her platform ffs. If we are a democracy then we all are guilty.

There are very few US news sites that continue to give as much attention to Gaza (and broader Israel/Palestine and Israel/Middle East) than Dropsite. Meanwhile, Tanden's Center for American Progress employees Anthony Blinken, who made sure Israel was getting all the weapons it needed to commit war crimes in Gaza.
Neera Tanden🌻@neeratanden

Hey @ryangrim - no one is going to jail you if you even just tweeted about Trump's support of starvation of Gazans like half as much as you tweeted two years ago.

The “Russian oligarchy” line is stuck in the 1990s. Russia hasn’t had an oligarchic class for about 20 years, not since Khodorkovsky was jailed and the Kremlin reasserted full control. Russia still has wealthy businessmen, but they have very little real influence over politics.
Timothy Snyder@TimothyDSnyder

The Hungarian election is about Russian oligarchy and its support of the international far right. That’s why Vance is there. He is a node in that network.

This fake leftist wants to hand Ukraine to Russia as a buffer zone, sacrificing the right to self determination of an entire people. When I call these people Neo-Stalinist I am being clinically accurate. Shame on any socialist who associates with the Progressive International

Yanis Varoufakis is a recurring guest commentator on the BBC. Here he is being interviewed by Russian state media RT and blaming Europe, not Russia, for the “forever war” in Ukraine.

@HorrorGorl @UnholyRome6 I’m ready to go Green but Jill Stein ain’t it. Nor was Howie Hawkins before her. She’s just not a serious contender for President. They need to draft people with experience inside the Death Star. Nothing will be easy but continuously running bad candidates will get nowhere.

The U.S. spends far more on healthcare than other rich countries. $15,000 per person (almost double), 18% of GDP (nearly twice as high), and healthcare inflation is 7% (roughly double others). Yet outcomes are worse. Life expectancy is lower, infant & maternal mortality higher, and chronic disease like diabetes and heart disease higher. Canada with single payer has far lower costs than the US, and even than Germany & Switzerland, and provides better, universal coverage. Most important, in an AI world, people's healthcare must not be dependent on their job. Every doctor should be in network. Medicare for All is needed for our time. It is a moral and economic imperative.
