No, but every time we complain about NATO burden sharing we're met with a bunch of ostensible justifications for it, including "Well, you guys get forward basing in our countries you can use whenever, so it's worth it for you because it lets you project your power." Then, when we go to use them, suddenly there's a caveat of "If we let you." Even though y'all have let us use those bases for non-NATO reasons in the past. It really seems like the shutdown is strictly because y'all don't like the current administration. This tells us that y'all are willing to tolerate us so long as you like the guy running our country. Suddenly, we're having to find our own methods to project our power after decades of hearing the above claim. If we have to find other ways to project our power anyway, then I fail to see a reason to keep those bases. Which is it? Do we have access to those bases, or do we not? If not, then it turns it from "mutual defense and power projection" to "Only if it serves European interests."

That, right there, is the rub. Culture is NOT biological. Culture is the people in a geographical location determining how they live their everyday lives. The gap between our cultures widens every day, and any attempt to reconcile that is met with disdain, contempt and mockery; Not from the European governments, but the European people. This pre-dates Trump by decades, going as far back as Eisenhower. We're too loud, we're too friendly, we're too optimistic, we work too hard, we're all jerks, we're too materialistic, we don't do everything how it's done in Europe, ergo Europe is better in every way. Why should we continue to support people who think of us like this? If y'all really are better than us, then I'm happy to move out of the way and give you guys a chance to prove it. The word you're thinking of is "heritage." There is an undeniable shared heritage between the US and the rest of NATO. The cultures are completely different.

@kyle45067 @ZoomerHistorian It's the foundation. I don't like our government's ideology, structure, etc either. But ultimately, culture is biological. So even if our two governments are having some tiff, we as kin should keep our eye on the shared prize. The success of our people in the long-term.

It is easy to forget that you are simply Europeans on another continent, do not let the hubris of Empire lead you into forgetting that. We did the same thing with Europe when we ruled the world, it's silly. We're all in this together and want the same thing buddy, drop the weird tone and us vs them mentality. We all love Americans here and want the best for them, people just have very legitimate criticisms about the American Government (past and present), don't take it personally.

My genuine advice to the European right (such that it exists) is to lean into the anti-American sentiment. That’s your path to power. You need an ‘oppressor’ to fight against. One that moderate voters already want to hate. And the obvious rhetorical choice is America. Who’s responsible for the European migrant crisis? Not Europeans! It’s those damn Americans who caused chaos in the Middle East and forced you to accept 50M migrants (don’t worry about proving the “forced” part, people will believe it because they want to). Who’s responsible for the European energy crisis? Not Europeans! It’s those damn Americans who pushed climate change and anti-nuclear narratives to deindustrialize Europe and keep it weak and dependent (don’t worry that Russia actually funded your Green parties, it’s more fun to blame America, so people will). What about NATO? Here’s where it gets tricky, so follow along closely: America didn’t create NATO to protect you from the Soviet Union, it created NATO to keep you weak and enslave you. But also, Donald Trump wants to leave NATO because he wants to keep you weak and enslave you. Does that seem like a contradiction? It doesn’t matter. Your voters want to believe both, so they will. Ukraine War? America forced Russia’s hand. Strait of Hormuz? America closed it. Fertility crisis? America psyop’d you into thinking the world was overpopulated. It works for everything. Blame America and watch the communists and Islamists start nodding along. Blame America even harder than they do and watch your rankings shoot up in the polls. Just don’t start believing it yourselves. Never get high on your own supply. A strong, self-confident Europe is good for both Europe and America. So if you ever actually get back to that and stand up and peer out across the wide world for a friend, there across the pond, your old pal America will be waiting.

You may wanna look up how those treasury bonds work before you hitch your wagon to that horse. To start, the US doesn't pay the principal early because someone sells off their bonds. Selling them would do literally nothing to us. Foreign holdings are 25-30% of US debt, across all nations. The rest is domestic. Even if this worked the way you seem to think it does, this won't collapse our economy. It'd be a black eye, but it'd heal. You'd be giving up future yields on interest and ridding yourself of the most stable liquid asset in the world to give us the finger. All we'd have to do to make up the difference is adjust the interest rate to attract new buyers. Everything above ignores the fact that the massive amount of bonds held by Europeans is privately held. I wish you the best of luck convincing private investors to tank their portfolios by giving up such a dependable liquid asset. This is the abridged version of how they work, by the way. I repeat: Look up how they actually work, then see if you wanna repeat yourself. Then rethink calling someone else a "stupid cunt."

I want to propose a system where Japanese and Americans "adopt" each other. Everyone gets a buddy from the other nation. The Americans have to teach the Japanese how to shoot guns and smoke BBQ. The Japanese have to teach the Americans how to properly use chopsticks and show us a historical site in Japan. I'm open to suggestions for activities.

May wanna do some checking of your facts. The North Atlantic Council invoked Article 5 on the US's behalf, on the condition that investigations showed that the attacks originated from abroad. Once Al Qaeda was confirmed to have been involved, the invocation was confirmed. Know what else is a requirement for NATO members? Article 3, which they have largely considered optional for the last 80 years.

No country has "called upon Article 5," because that's not how it works. The NAC invoked Article 5 on 9/12/01, on the condition that investigations proved that the attacks came from abroad. All responded, because they had to. Some came enthusiastically, others put hard rules of engagement on their troops. Yes, ~1000 allied troops died. That doesn't change the fact that all these countries did was honor a treaty they voluntarily signed up for.

It's rich listening to Europeans shit on us for expecting our allies to honor a treaty they voluntarily entered into. Especially when we didn't invoke Article 5: the NAC did it on our behalf, on the condition that investigations confirmed the actions came from abroad. It's especially rich listening to a bunch of noise from "allies" who think a one-time honoring of Article 5 erases 7 decades of treating Article 3 as optional. Maybe do a baseline of fact confirmation before you try mocking us. You all finally paying 2% doesn't rewrite the history books.

Incorrect. It was invoked by the North Atlantic Council unanimously on the US's behalf on 9/12, without us asking. "An attack on one is an attack on all," after all. Some came enthusiastically. Others sent token support with strict rules of engagement. Yes, some of their own died. That does not impose an eternal debt on us, especially with the graveyards in Europe full of hundreds of thousands of US soldiers who never came home after WWI and WWII. At the end of the day, they honored a treaty they voluntarily signed up for. Quit treating it as more than it is. All have treated Article 3 as a suggestion for decades, and been self-righteous pricks about it the entire time. This goes all the way back to Eisenhower. Their disdain for us pre-dates Trump's political ascension by 70+ years.

@seanspicer It's rich reading the lies of a professional liar whose only flaw was he wasn't good enough a liar for donald trump. FACT: NATO is a defense treaty. FACT: It's been invoked ONE TIME. By US. And NATO responded and helped us. So in FACT, you have lied like a fucking pig.

@TJCurtVT @seanspicer Maybe if the rest of NATO took Article 3 seriously, we'd consider them worth consulting. Also, all evidence points to Ukraine being responsible for blowing up Nord Stream.

@seanspicer Maybe if Trump wanted their help he might have consulted with them before he blew up Iran and destroyed their access to energy. First we take out Nordstream then we precipitated the closure of the strait of Hormuz and you expect gratitude? NATO was dead long ago.
