@jrwhitehead @BaptistLeaders I do agree Jon. That makes Willy Rice’s forthcoming book so important. A megachurch pastor himself explores how obsession with numbers has gone wrong and illumines a better path forward.

My only quibble (and I suspect @mdevine60 agrees with me) is that "mega" doesn't have to be antithetical to "healthy SBC." Bellevue, First Dallas, First Jacksonville -- all were big and Baptist. But the predominant model has become Warren-Hybels, seeker-mega that encouraged -- nay demanded -- increasing distance between consumer and clergy, and absolute indifference of the consumers about the clergy's picayune denominational clubs. Renewal means lifting up pastors who produce laymen who care about being Baptist.

Mark Devine can't hit singles, only home runs. "Denominational education has collapsed in local churches, and increasing numbers of SBC seminary graduates exhibit little knowledge of or interest in the Baptist name, Baptist history, or the importance and mission of SBC institutions today. Theological students shopped for and purchased a theological product, and that’s about it." centerforbaptistleadership.org/a-southern-bap…

@Chris430968 So we should conduct foreign policy according to your pants wetting proclivities. Don’t think so. Won’t happen. Put on a diaper, get off media, and us men will take care of you. It’s our job.

@ChristopherHale And an Achilles Heel that element of DNA is. This Pope’s stupidity is doing real harm to billions. Shame on him and his thoughtless sycophant supporters.

Free political advice — never attack the pope. Catholics, no matter their politics nor the popes, will always be defensive of both the man and the office. It’s in our DNA.

@CarriePrejean1 Impressive. But the current Pope is stupid and doing much harm. We should fill Vatican City, including Leo’s bedroom with criminal illegals and see it the White Sox fan is teachable.

@profyancey Your comment displays a failure to acknowledge the dangers and backwardness of re-segregating to provide safe spaces to black Christians ostensibly too fragile to handle the real world. I too have affection for the black church. Wise affection agrees with Megan.

This sort of comment displays a tremendous lack of knowledge about what the black church is. I am no longer attending black churches as I now thrive in multiracial settings. But I have a deep appreciation of the black church and its place in our society and Christian culture. The black church developed as a reaction to the rejection of blacks from white churches and as a way for blacks to organize to resist racism. It still plays a role in channeling the black voice, although now many non-Christian organizations are prominent in playing that role. But if the question is an honest one, I can say that even as I was growing up, there were whites in black churches - often the spouses of blacks. And they were always well accepted. The vast majority of black churches (one can find an exception for everything) are not instruments of separation but attempts to create inclusion of blacks into the larger society. If whites want to attend conferences like this to create trouble, then yes, they will be shown the door. This is true with any gathering, regardless of the race of the organizers. But if whites want to understand why black Christians feel the way they do and the issues they are confronted with, then I know that they will find the vast majority of these conferences not only welcoming but also enlightening.
Megan Basham@megbasham

.@Lifeway real question, I am not black, but I am an SBC church member and this announcement says black church members welcome. Will I be welcome at this conference?

@AntiTrumpCanada He’s twice elected and repeatedly has other heads of state dancing to the tune he plays. Iranians and Venezuelans the world over have recently danced in the streets singing his praises. Thus, not sure who the “we” is to whom you refer, but it’s not the entire world, Not close.

@JohnJHarwood The Pope is a liberal Dem Chicagoan who likes the White Sox and went to seminary. That’s it. Yet a billion Roman Catholics bear the bear the burden of taking his ignorant pronouncements seriously. Bummer. Wash your hands of that burden. Become Protestant.

@kevinmyoung @jamestalarico How is the early evangelical pro-choice stance an argument against opposing JS? It’s not. America enslaved blacks. FDR interned Japanese Americans. If you oppose both, does that display ignorance of history or rule out your proper opposition? Bad thinkers live on non sequiturs.

Evangelicals crashing out over @jamestalarico and abortion show they don’t know their own story. Evangelicals were the original Pro-Choicers. … until they rebranded as a Republican movement rather than a Christian one.

@iamAtheistGirl Correct. What makes us all bad is our sin. Not sin according to you or me but according to God who reveals his verdict upon us all in Holy Scripture and most supremely in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. That’s what our sin caused.

JUST IN: Pope Leo SIV issues urgent plea for peace in Middle East & Iran, warning about risk of an “irreparable chasm” “I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and Iran in these dramatic moments. Peace is not built with threat and arms which will only result in destructions and death, but only through reasonable dialogue that is also authentic and responsible. Let us call on the parties involved to take up the moral responsibility and end the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable chasm. May diplomacy recover its role so it can promote the good of peoples and promote peace founded on justice. We continue to pray for peace.”

Trump ripped up the Iran nuclear deal and created this mess. Now, he's putting servicemembers in harm's way with no clear plan and no Congressional approval. The American people deserve answers — and Congress needs to do its job.
