Social Media Question of the Week: Do you think Christ's return & the resurrection of all Christians may be delayed until just before the Sun engulfs Earth 4.5 billion years from now? My Answer: Jesus promised he would return. The second coming of Jesus Christ is part of the creedal statements of Christianity. He told his disciples, as recorded at the end of the book of Matthew, that he would return when his followers make disciples in every people group on Earth. Christians have made amazing progress toward the completion of this assignment, especially during the past two centuries. Ralph Winter, who founded the U. S. Center for World Mission, wrote that Christians already possess the wealth, people, and technology to finish the task Jesus assigned to his followers in just a single decade. All they lack is the motivation. Therefore, I don't believe the return of Christ will be delayed for a billion years, not a million years, not even a thousand years. It certainly must happen before the Sun becomes too bright to sustain global human civilization on Earth, an event which will occur in less than 2.5 million years.
