Bayern Munich have bought four players from other Bundesliga clubs since the 2020/2021 season
Hiroki Ito - €23.5m
Yann Sommer - €7m
Dayot Upamecano - €42.5m
Marcel Sabizter - €15m
If you want to be technical, Bayern Munich paid a small fee to let Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof join a few weeks early for the Club World Cup (after they already agreed to come to club on a free).
Bayern Munich have also signed multiple players on a free transfer:
Konrad Laimer
Raphael Guerreiro
Sven Ulreich
Alexander Nubel
The club's transfer policy started shifting years ago from being heavily focused on German international players in the Bundesliga and more towards international stars. This isn't new.
I don't blame other Bundesliga clubs. Like Karl-Heinz Rumminegge said, “I can only congratulate the people [in Stuttgart] for finding – let me use quotation marks here – ‘an idiot’ who paid that much money, because we certainly wouldn’t have done that in Munich.”
The Premier League has spent nearly €3 Billion on Bundesliga players since the 2019/2020 season ended. This past summer transfer window alone, the Premier League spent over €500m on Bundesliga players alone.
Bayern Munich have done an exceptional job at finding players that fit their system and philosophy. Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz are three of the best players in the world this season.
It's also not a coincidence that since Bayern's transfer strategy shifted, the German National Team has been horrible.
World Cup 2018 - Group Stage
Euro 2020 - Round of 16
World Cup 2022 - Group Stage
Euro 2024 - Quarter Finals
The bottom line is that Bayern Munich are willing to splash cash for the right player and league they play in is irrelevant. At the same time, Bayern Munich will not overpay for a player they aren't convinced of. This has been Bayern's transfer strategy for years and it's the reason they continue to be one of the biggest clubs in the world.
