As we near the end of the agreed 2 week ceasefire, this is a critical diplomatic moment. For the last 6 days I’ve travelled through 5 countries, speaking to more than a dozen foreign ministers and counterparts, to maintain international pressure on opening the Strait of Hormuz.

A little reminder about where Nigel Farage stood on the appointment of Mandelson as ambassador. BBC News December 2024: ‘Farage has meanwhile said that he "might disagree with Mandelson on his politics, but he's a very intelligent man" and would be good choice for ambassador.’

Please tell me if I have misread this. Boris Johnson failed the vetting process before becoming the PM!

I would have sympathy with this. But Starmer's problem isn't simply his deceitfulness & lack of grip re Mandelson. It's that he did that after being so censorious & unforgiving towards Boris Johnson's much lesser failings.
Josh Glancy@joshglancy

Unless he is found to have deliberately lied, it would in my view be pretty odd for Starmer to resign over Mandelson, or indeed his government’s wider political struggles. For our own democratic wellbeing, the bar for an elected prime minister to resign should be very high.

If being "brainwashed by Brussels" means young Erasmus Brits speaking new languages, falling in love and discovering their own beautiful continent like we could - aka 𝒏𝒐𝒕 becoming the narrow-minded oinks that read and write this kind of headline👇then 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧 !

@TheMoronfinder @paullewismoney How is it British voters’ fault that the EU is incapable of introducing an airport security system adequately? It only goes to prove how right we were to leave such a useless organisation that introduces an expensive, pointless system that doesn’t even work. Typical of the EU!

Flown to EU. Passed the EES machine tests, sent to egate which sent me to manual. Long queue. Complained and taken through EES again with official watching. Go to egate. Did so. Rejected again. Allowed to push in manual Q half way, thanks to kind official. To call it snail pace an insult to snails. Waiting.

@campbellclaret That’s because people were coming in on lorries instead. It was Nigel Farage who highlighted the small boat problem, years before anyone else did.

The New Statesman@NewStatesman

SHOULD KEIR STARMER RESIGN? By @AndrewMarr9 "As so often in these political crises, the final decision about the future of the Prime Minister rests not with his media critics, his grandstanding enemies in politics, the analysed intricacies of a fiddly Whitehall plot – or, indeed, with the voters. All these groups will have their time. But there are only two people who will make the final decision. One is the person who shaves Keir Starmer’s chin in the morning, brushes his teeth and drinks his coffee. The other, perhaps more important, is a Labour-supporting lawyer called Victoria Starmer. She knows the almost impossible pressures of the job and the pain, frustration and anger her husband increasingly feels. Once this crisis is over, there is an urgent conversation to be had about whether we have made the job of leading Britain impossible – loading too many problems onto too flimsy a centre – whether we are talking about Tory, Labour or in the future, perhaps, Reform politicians. That’s for another day. For now, let’s look at the case for Starmer deciding to go. However strange it might seem to say so right now, Peter Mandelson’s vetting is a side issue. As a people we face horrendous problems lack of growth, threats from abroad, lack of hope and self-belief. Starmer did well to keep us out of the Iran war but, across the rest of the picture, his government isn’t working." Read more from our editor at large: newstatesman.com/politics/westm…

I see that Australia has imported Dr Upton to work as a "female" doctor. Unless he has changed his ways, his female colleagues should expect him to pop up in their changing rooms, armed with a little notebook in which he will record any signs, however slight, of their displeasure

When I first stuck my head above the parapet as a priest, after being broken by the unnecessary loss of life at Southport, I was incredulous at the deflection of what was clearly a failure to protect lives by the machinations of government in blaming the ‘far right.’ Those who know me well know that I constantly stand for righteousness. We have all witnessed, at the dispatch box, whataboutery at PMQs that is quite frankly off any kind of measurement scale for the last almost two years. The argument that I am better because what I have done is far less wrong than what you have done is no argument at all. This culture clearly runs deep in the @UKLabour party. This car-crash interview from an MP, who like his leader has proven himself to be dishonest (see the stealing election leaflet video doing the rounds), takes whataboutery to another level, utilising images of our late Queen and thinking he has the upper hand. So convinced are they that they are right, when in fact they are rotten to the core. Well done @CamillaTominey for holding @TomHayesBmouth’s feet to the fire 🔥 Tom, my advice: take a good hard look at yourself and at the most dishonest PM this country has ever known, as history will record when his time in office is finally over.

@Gonch2020 @LizWebsterSBF @4KingAl For starters, it will tie us up in so much pointless red tape, we will lose any competitive edge we might have had complying with unnecessary rules & regs, which will apply to all businesses including farming, even though only 8% of businesses trade direct with the EU.

If I was PM, I’d go straight to Europe and say: forget the Brexit red lines, let’s get back into the single market immediately. I’d use emergency powers so we’re inside the EU’s resilience and can secure resources. And tell Donald Trump we don’t want his bad trade deals. Then make sure farms have what they need to produce food and speak to farmers urgently! Listen to 🎙 Food Fighters podcast here: share.transistor.fm/s/0f6ef85a

@DakdaR22 @4KingAl Strange - the EU was dead against helping Ukraine for at least the first 9 months of the war, and carried on buying Russian energy, having made Europe dependent on it, knowing this was (literally) fuelling the ongoing war.

Just collected my Marney from doggo hospital. I was about to leave for church this morning and she suddenly started fitting. Rigid, shaking, foaming. Never happened before. Terrifying for both of us. Idiopathic pancreatitis. Very expensive day. She’s worth every penny.🐾
