Happy birthday to former Putnam City, Tulsa Memorial, University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys defensive back Randy Hughes, born on this day in 1953 in Oklahoma City. Hughes began his high school career as a quarterback at Putnam City, but transferred to Memorial as a sophomore, where he was moved to safety. He was the Tulsa World's Player of the Year as a senior in 1970 and earned All-State honors after helping the Memorial Chargers go 8-3-1. He led the Chargers in tackles and also had 11 interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He signed with the University of Oklahoma, where as a sophomore he started the Sooners' 14-0 Sugar Bowl victory over Penn State in which the Sooner defense limited the Nittany Lions to just 196 total yards. He became the Sooners' everyday starter in 1973 and earned First-Team All-Big Eight honors. He duplicated that feat in 1974 and added First-Team All-American as well. Against sixth-ranked Nebraska, Hughes intercepted three passes in the top-ranked Sooners' 28-14 win, on their way to the national championship that year. To this day he remains seventh on OU's all-time list for interceptions with 14. In 1975, the Dallas Cowboys selected Hughes in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. He had two interceptions as a rookie, including one he returned 33 yards for a touchdown in the Cowboys' 31-21 win over the New York Jets in the regular season finale. His best game as a professional came in Super Bowl XII when he earned MVP consideration after making five tackles, intercepting a pass and recovering two fumbles in Dallas' 27-10 win over the Denver Broncos. Recurring shoulder injuries shortened his NFL career to just six seasons. He had nine interceptions before retiring prior to the start of the 1981 regular season. In 1979, Hughes was named to the All-Decade Big Eight Team and in 1995 he was named to the All-Time Big Eight Team. He was also a 1974 inductee into the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame Scholars. After his football career, Hughes became a luxury homebuilder in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Happy birthday Randy! #tdfn #okpreps @TulsamemorialFB @OU_Football @dallascowboys

Slight throwback, but an incredible photo. These two meant so much in getting the OU defense back where it belongs.🫡
