“A single ‘Blessed be God’ in adversity is worth more than a thousand acts of thanksgiving in prosperity.”
— St. John of Ávila
📅 Feast Day: May 10
St. John of Ávila is reminding us that it is easy to thank God when life is going well. But when you are suffering, confused, grieving, anxious, or carrying a heavy cross, and you still say “Blessed be God,” that kind of faith means much more. It shows trust instead of comfort. Anyone can praise God in prosperity, but praising Him in adversity takes surrender.
This does not mean pretending pain is good or acting like suffering does not hurt. Even Jesus wept and suffered. But throughout Scripture, we see people who stayed faithful in trials. Job lost almost everything and still said, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).
Sometimes the deepest act of faith is not a long prayer. It is simply refusing to turn away from God when life becomes difficult.
💬 Do you think most people grow closer to God through comfort… or through suffering?
Someone you know may need this reminder right now.
