It's my theory that Valve put together the Steam machine to highlight what SteamOS was capable of. When the steam machine was designed it would have been considerably cheaper.
Ultimately you actually can't build a PC that's better in every point as the Steam machine for less.
You have to sacrifice certain aspects. Mostly size and integration. I don't even think it's possible to build an ITX system the size of the Steam machine. Some people are willing to give up performance for the size.

I guess so. Personally, I think it's purpose is to promote SteamOS. But ultimately you can load any operating system you want on it. It's not locked down to Steam. So it can't really be subsidized. The reason consoles can be subsidized is because they are locked down to their own ecosystems. If you could play games that weren't from Sony on a PlayStation, the PlayStation wouldn't be subsidized.

The PS5 generation only truly began in the last couple years, we barely just now started to take advantage of these consoles, we do not need $1200 PS6.
