Making peace is a bigger challenge than war, and needs a different kind of Durandhar, not the one you get in the fantasy productions of some Bollywood directors, I write for India Forum theindiaforum.in/politics/india… @ramreddy #indiapakistan

Reagan shows why you need a man of high moral character in the White House. NYT, Aug 13, 1982, REAGAN DEMANDS END TO ATTACKS IN A BLUNT TELEPHONE CALL TO BEGIN WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 - President Reagan expressed ''outrage'' to Prime Minister Menachem Begin today over Israel's latest bombing raids in west Beirut, saying the attacks had resulted in ''needless destruction and bloodshed.''.. Larry Speakes, the deputy White House press secretary, said Mr. Reagan had been ''shocked'' by the Israeli attacks ... ''The President expressed his outrage over this latest round of massive military action,'' ... Mr. Speakes, asked whether Mr. Reagan had shouted at the Prime Minister, declined to comment. American officials - including, apparently, Mr. Reagan - were stunned by not only the scale of the Israeli air attacks but also the possibility that Mr. Habib's peace proposals could fall apart because of them. Asked if Mr. Reagan had threatened to suspend American arms aid or take other retaliation, Mr. Speakes replied, ''I won't discuss that.''

Who is this "international community"? Those who are complicit or those who are silent? Those waxing eloquent about strategic autonomy? Those whose pragmatism tells them to wait & watch? Those who welcome this 'ceasefire' without condemning the genocidal threat that preceded it?
Volker Türk@volker_turk

I condemn the massive wave of strikes by #Israel across #Lebanon today, with reports of hundreds killed and injured, including civilians. This puts enormous pressure on a fragile ceasefire in the region, which is so desperately needed. ➡️ ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

Tonight, Pakistan achieved one of its biggest diplomatic wins in years. It also defied many skeptics and naysayers that didn’t think it had the capacity to pull off such a complex, high stakes feat. But what matters the most is it helped avert a potential catastrophe in Iran.

Stopping attacks on essential infrastructure is a humanitarian necessity; any further destruction will have catastrophic consequences for millions of civilians across the region Objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, including drinking water installations, electricity networks, and medical facilities, are afforded special protection and must not be targeted. As emphasized by international humanitarian organizations, the destruction of critical infrastructure in armed conflict can lead to cascading public health emergencies and the collapse of essential services, placing millions of civilians at acute risk. Continued attacks affecting essential civilian infrastructure by all sides to the conflict will result in catastrophic humanitarian consequences for millions across the region. The international community must act urgently to reinforce these obligations and help prevent a large-scale humanitarian disaster. The woman who inspired Before Sunrise never saw the movie. She died in a motorcycle accident seven weeks before filming even started. Richard Linklater met Amy Lehrhaupt in a toy shop in Philadelphia in 1989. They spent the whole night walking the city from midnight to 6am talking about everything, and he turned that one night into a script. Took him 11 days. The casting search lasted nine months. Jennifer Aniston auditioned before she ever got Friends, and Gwyneth Paltrow tried out too. The role went to Julie Delpy. Amy died on May 9, 1994. She was 24. Linklater kept waiting for her to show up at a screening, maybe tap him on the shoulder and say “Hey, that was our night.” He waited through the premiere. Waited through the sequel nine years later. Didn’t find out she was gone until 2010, when a friend of hers put the pieces together and wrote him a letter. He kept making the films. Brought Hawke and Delpy back every nine years, letting them age on screen in real time. Before Sunset (2004) was shot in 15 days for $2 million. Before Midnight (2013), same thing, 15 days, under $3 million. That last one is dedicated to Amy. All three films together cost $7.5 million to make and earned $61.5 million worldwide, and both sequels got nominated for the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The entire trilogy cost less than a single Janet Jackson music video that Kahn himself directed. The Library of Congress added Before Sunrise to the National Film Registry earlier this year. It’s now one of 925 films the government considers worth keeping forever. Linklater turned a single night with a woman he’d never see again into an 18-year trilogy. He just didn’t know the “never” part when he started.
Joseph Kahn@JosephKahn

Before Sunrise is unwatchable because it's so good. It's such a beautiful encapsulation of young iPhoneless love, shot on analog film, a nineties time machine of a mysterious Europe that no longer exists, you feel like you are dying as you watch it.

Many in the west will not like the message below, but at least a moment’s reflection on double standards is warranted. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine was rightly denounced. But few western states call out breaches of international law when the boot is on the other foot.

Terrible news from Tehran: I just heard that the Iranian authorities today arrested the great human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. It's not known where she has been taken. Nasrin has been mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for her unflinching courage and moral leadership. I hope thought leaders worldwide will call on the Iranian authorities to release this brave woman who represents the best of Iran. Her husband, Reza Khandan, is already in prison serving a sentence for advocating for women's rights. Iran should release them -- and all political prisoners. It was wrong for the Shah to imprison people for peaceful expression of political views, and it's wrong for the Islamic Republic to do so today.

On 29 March–after weeks of persistent follow-up and despite the compounded difficulties amid the armed conflict and shutdown of virtually all forms of communications by the Iranian government, Mohammadi’s legal team, accompanied by one family member, visited her in Zanjan Prison under heightened security surveillance. Her general health was extremely poor, and she appeared pale and weak with significant weight loss when brought to the visitation room by a prison nurse. Mohammadi reported that following a loss of consciousness at the Mashhad detention center, a specialist urgently recommended an angiography; instead, she was transferred to Zanjan Prison. She noted that shortly after the war began, reports of nearby strikes and massive explosions heard from within the prison, added to her severe stress. Most recently on 31 March, U.S and Israel airstrikes hit south of Zanjan, only several kilometers away from the prison where Mohammadi is kept alongside prisoners convicted of violent crimes, including murder and drug offenses. Reports also indicate that some of these prisoners have constantly subjected her to harassment, abuse, and threats. Read More : narges.foundation/an-update-on-t… #Iran #FreeNarges #War
