Contrary to popular imagination, societies rarely collapse in dramatic fashion, decline usually unfolds quietly. Institutions that once anchored moral order are gradually weakened while political leaders, media elites, and sometimes even the institutions themselves hesitate to acknowledge what is plainly occurring.
