YouTube uses a process called transcoding to create a "bitrate ladder", separate files for every resolution from 144p to 4K When you switch, your player doesn't download a whole new file from the start... it just stops requesting the 5-second "chunks" of data from the 144p file and starts requesting them from the 1080p version instead. It’s like switching from a comic book to a 4K Blu-ray mid-story

Explain this: When you switch from 144p to 1080p on YouTube… does the server send a different file for each quality?
